# Walmart invested in Base Power, which claims 100 megawatts a month on a $13 billion valuation

> Base Power announced backup batteries for nearly 6,500 North Texas homes, a Walmart investment, and a 100 MW-a-month install pace, all on a $13 billion valuation. Homeowners fund the fleet; Base pools it and sells it back to the grid.

[Base Power](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/base-power), the Austin startup founded in 2023 by Zach Dell, son of [Dell Technologies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dell-technologies) founder Michael Dell, just moved three ways in a week [1][4]. On November 5 it announced battery backup for nearly 6,500 homes in three Hillwood Communities subdivisions in North Texas, about 9,500 at full build-out [1][4]. On October 30, [Walmart announced a strategic investment](https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/10/Walmart-Base-Power-Agreement) and an in-store channel offering 20% off Base's upfront installation fee from this month [2].

On November 2, [a Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission filing](https://www.energychoicematters.com/news/base-power-will-be-installing-100-mw-of-batteries-per-month-by-year-end) surfaced Base's claim that it will install roughly 100 megawatts of batteries per month by year-end [3]. All of this sits on a $13 billion valuation from a $1 billion Series D in August [1][2][3].

Since our last look at the company in October, when we covered [the discounted battery pricing it sells in Illinois](https://theinference.com/article/base-power-sells-illinois-a-95-battery-and-keeps-an-11-760-rebate) [5], the story has changed shape: Base has a retail channel with [Walmart](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/walmart)'s roughly 280 million weekly customers and a builder channel that concentrates installs house by house [1][2].

## The hardware is the cheap part; the fleet is the asset

Homeowners pay an upfront installation fee and an electricity bill for a battery Base owns and services. The Base Core holds 39.2 kilowatt-hours, up to 36 hours of backup [1][4]. What makes that cheap for the homeowner is the virtual power plant (VPP): Base pools thousands of home batteries so they behave on the grid like one large plant, charging when power is cheap and discharging when demand spikes, and passing some of that revenue back as lower prices [6].

Base qualified last year under the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the grid operator for most of Texas, and its Aggregated Distributed Energy Resource program, which lets it sell that pooled capacity into the wholesale market [1]. More than half of Base's customers are in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), where it installs about 50 of its roughly 100 batteries a day [1][4]. Co-operatives are buying in: South Texas co-op [GVEC contracted 50 megawatts from Base](https://www.utilitydive.com/news/base-power-partnership-to-mitigate-price-spikes-load-peaks-for-south-texas/818221/), and its CEO says batteries behind a customer's meter cut the co-op's transmission costs in a way a grid-scale plant cannot [7].

## The demand behind it is the AI buildout

ERCOT demand hit a record 91.1 gigawatts on July 22 [1]. The growth is data centers and electrification, and the constraint is time: a conventional 100-megawatt plant takes two to four years to connect, while Base says it assembles an equivalent distributed fleet in under 12 months [6]. That is the second hop of the AI buildout, compute demand reaching into a homeowner's garage, and data-center buyers are [explicitly shopping for interconnect speed](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/19/home-batteries-are-suddenly-cheap-and-everywhere-heres-why/) [6].

## Whether the 100 MW a month is real is what the $13 billion rests on

Every install figure here is self-reported; none is contracted revenue disclosed to investors. The competition is not waiting: [Tesla](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tesla) cut Powerwall leasing to 27 kilowatt-hours for $35 a month, more than two-thirds off its prior monthly price [6]. Base's answer is 39.2 kilowatt-hours for $19 and a distribution channel no rival has [2][6].

If the monthly install rate holds, every 100 megawatts Base adds is capacity ERCOT does not have to procure centrally, and utilities and storage names will have to copy the model [3][7]. If the rate is a target rather than booked orders, the valuation carries the gap. The concrete watch-point is whether Base starts disclosing contracted versus installed capacity, and the first quarterly install numbers after the Walmart channel opened [2][3].

*Chart: **Base's oversized batteries give it more grid flexibility per home** Bar chart comparing backup capacity per battery unit: Base Core at 39.2 kilowatt-hours, Tesla Powerwall 3 at 13.5, Enphase IQ 10 at about 10.1.*

## Takeaway

Base Power claims a $13 billion valuation on a 100-megawatt-a-month install rate, a Walmart retail channel and a builder channel; every figure is self-reported, so whether the rate is booked orders or a target is what the valuation rests on.
