# Xiaomi's SU7 deliveries fell 19.55% in September while it spent HK$112 million buying back stock

> Xiaomi trademarked a stretched SU7 and the press called it a luxury flagship. The delivery data published the same day says it is a lifecycle fix for a fading sedan, and the HK$112 million buyback is not a coincidence.

A [trademark filing](https://cnevpost.com/2026/10/19/xiaomi-su9-lux-name-emerges/) for "[Xiaomi](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/xiaomi) SU9 LUX" surfaced on October 19 [1][2], and the car press wrote it up as Xiaomi stepping upmarket into chauffeured executive sedans. Read it next to [the delivery data published the same day](https://www.automotiveworld.com/news/a-stretched-su7-may-be-xiaomis-answer-to-fading-demand/) and it is the opposite of a halo: it is cheap life support for a sedan that is fading. Xiaomi (HKEX: 1810) applied for the mark on February 13, 2026, and registered it on September 7, and a camouflaged test car points at a stretched SU7, over 5.2 metres long against the regular car's 4.99 [1][2].

## A stretch adds price, not bodies

Stretched is the tell. Long-wheelbase sedans are China's executive playbook, and extending an existing platform is the cheapest route to a new model [2]. But a stretch does not add bodies. It repositions the same car at a higher price on the same platform. You reach for that when nothing new is behind it, and Xiaomi's numbers say nothing new is behind it.

## September's record month still misses the plan

The SU7 delivered 26,826 units in April, the month after the new-generation SU7 launched in March 2026, and 15,751 in September, down 19.55% year on year [1][2]. That is a fading lift, not a demand base. Total deliveries were 40,015, the best month of 2026, with [the new Sky Nomad extended-range series](https://theinference.org/article/xiaomi-locked-70-000-orders-for-its-extended-range-suv-and-needs-about-87-800-deliveries-a-month-in-q4) supplying 12,444 and the YU7 an implied 11,800 [2]. Even so, the month was 4.61% below last year, and the Sky Nomad's [70,000 locked-in orders](https://cnevpost.com/2026/10/08/xiaomi-sky-nomad-70000-locked-in-orders/) [5] support demand but not the annual target.

*Chart: **September's record month leaned on the SUVs, not the SU7** Pie chart of Xiaomi's September 2026 deliveries split by model: SU7 15,751, Sky Nomad 12,444, YU7 an implied 11,800*

*September 2026 deliveries by model, units. SU7 and Sky Nomad figures reported by Automotive World [2]; the YU7 figure is implied from Xiaomi's reported total of 40,015, and the three sum to 39,995 of it. Source: Automotive World delivery table [2]. [2]*

Repeat September's record for the whole year and Xiaomi delivers about 480,000 cars against the 550,000-unit annual target [2]. The stretch cannot close that gap; only volume from the SUVs can.

## The buyback in the same month is the tell

Now add the money. Xiaomi spent HK$112.0 million [buying back its own Class B shares](https://www.tradingview.com/news/tradingview:97d4c5bcb4a43:0-weekly-recap-smartphone-shipments-down-30-and-4-4m-type-b-buyback/) on October 12 and 16, with the stock near HK$25.60, about 58% below peak, while its phone business, squeezed by memory costs up sharply on AI demand, shipped 29% fewer units [3][4]. A company missing its own delivery plan while spending cash on its stock is signaling the plan, not adding to it. Because a stretch adds price but not bodies, treat the SU9 Lux as a margin play on an ageing platform, and wait for the Q3 EV gross margin before deciding the buyback is a floor and not a tell.

## Takeaway

The SU9 Lux trademark reads as a margin play on an ageing sedan, not a halo: with SU7 deliveries down 19.55% year on year in September and the phone business shrinking, the HK$112 million buyback signals the delivery plan rather than supporting it. Wait for Q3 EV gross margin before calling the buyback a floor.
