# Zebra sold its robots to Skild AI at 6.6 cents on the dollar, and the stock nearly doubled anyway

> Zebra's 10-Q shows it sold the former Fetch Robotics unit to Skild AI for $20 million in March, against the $301 million it paid in 2021. The stock's doubling came from the scanner and printer core; the robots now sit inside a startup priced above 140 times revenue.

## Six cents on the dollar, straight from the filing

On March 27, 2026, [Zebra Technologies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/zebra-technologies), the barcode-scanner and label-printer maker, closed the sale of its robotics automation business, the former warehouse-robot maker Fetch Robotics, to [Skild AI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/skild-ai), a Pittsburgh start-up selling one software "brain" meant to run many kinds of robot [1][4]. Zebra's 10-Q, [the quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, for the quarter ended April 4 lists the terms](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/877212/000162828026034109/zbra-20260404.htm): $9 million in cash, $2 million in escrow and a $9 million minority stake in Skild, $20 million in all [1].

Zebra [had paid $301 million for Fetch on August 9, 2021](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/877212/000087721221000191/zbra-20211002.htm), $290 million of it in cash [2]. The $5 million gain on the sale says less about the price than the write-downs that came before it: the unit's net assets were down to $15 million, and the Fetch technology carried at $100 million in 2021 left the books at $3 million [1][2].

*Chart: **Zebra paid $301 million for Fetch in 2021 and sold it for $20 million** Column chart comparing what Zebra paid for Fetch Robotics in 2021 with what it sold the unit for in 2026, plus the unit's net assets and remaining technology value at sale.*

*US$ millions, per Zebra's 10-Q filings for the quarters ended October 2, 2021 and April 4, 2026. Net assets were down to $15 million after impairments. [1][2]*

## Zebra sold from weakness; Skild was raising at $14 billion

Zebra was not selling from strength. In December 2025 it told the SEC it would "dispose [of] or exit" [its autonomous mobile robot business, taking up to $80 million in charges](https://wwd.com/sourcing-journal/logistics/zebra-technologies-robotics-warehouse-automation-autonomous-mobile-robots-amr-strategic-review-fulfillment-1238860633/), roughly $60 million of it impairment; The Robot Report, the robotics trade publication that first disclosed the review, said most of the robotics staff would be laid off by the end of 2025 [3]. The buyer was pointed the other way. Skild raised $1.4 billion in January, led by SoftBank, at a valuation above $14 billion, and [said on September 10 that it had passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue](https://thenextweb.com/news/skild-ai-100m-run-rate-eu-rules) across more than 60 customers, about 4% of it the robot fleet inherited from Zebra [4][5]. Skild's ARR is its own unaudited figure, and the multiple it implies, above 140 times run-rate revenue, is the round's price, not an audited result [4].

## The doubling came from scanners and printers

The stock's run had nothing to do with robots. Second-quarter revenue was $1.56 billion, up 20.4% year over year; adjusted EPS of $6.35 beat a $4.36 consensus; and [full-year guidance rose to $20.75–$21.25](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/corporate-news/zebra-technologies-stock-climbs-after-q2-beat-and-guidance-lift/69979225) [6][7]. Ariel, the Chicago mutual-fund manager, named Zebra the top contributor to its fund's third quarter, citing pricing that offset memory-supply costs, and BNP Paribas, the French bank, [lifted its price target to $460 on October 15](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/nebenwerte/bnp-paribas-raises-target-for-zebra-technologies-stock-to-usd-460/70353234) [6][8]. The shares climbed from a 52-week low of $199.05 to $369.01 on October 17, a $17.5 billion market cap [6][9]. That is the counterargument to the six-cent exit: at Zebra, automation demand pays through scanners, printers and RFID tags, the businesses it kept.

*Chart: **Zebra's growth came back without the robots** Column chart of Zebra Technologies quarterly net sales from Q1 2024 to Q2 2026, rising from $1.17 billion to $1.56 billion with year-over-year growth accelerating to 20.4%.*

*Quarterly net sales, US$ billions, per Zebra's SEC filings. The robotics unit was sold in the March 2026 quarter. [10]*

## November 3 prices the leftovers

Zebra reports third-quarter results before the open on November 3 and files the 10-Q that carries its Skild stake [6]. Nine million dollars is a rounding error against Zebra's $8.3 billion balance sheet, but it is a rare listed-company line on what private robot-AI equity is worth while that trade reprices [1]. Watch whether the stake is marked up, marked down or left untouched; the first reading lands in 16 days.

## Takeaway

Zebra's exit from robots, at 6.6 cents on the dollar, is a one-line read on private robot-AI valuations: the buyer, Skild AI, is priced above 140 times run-rate revenue while the seller's stock nearly doubled on a scanner and printer core that needed no robots.
