Corning's Optical unit jumps 44% to $2.38 billion on AI demand while Solar swings to a $7 million loss

The 8-K filed this morning shows Optical Communications up 44% to $2.38 billion while Solar sat flat at $436 million and swung to a $7 million loss, a segment table no one has written up yet.

Optical fiber of the kind Corning sells into AI data centers: Optical Communications grew 44% to $2.38 billion in the third quarter.

Corning's+0.02% — Corning, up 0.02 percent today third quarter, filed with the SEC on October 27, 2026, was the strongest since the Springboard plan launched: core sales grew 19% year over year to $5.08 billion and core EPS grew 36% to $0.91 1. Nearly all of that power came from one plug. Optical Communications, the segment selling fiber and cable into AI data centers, grew sales 44% to $2.38 billion, Enterprise Networks grew 84%, and Gen AI product sales more than doubled, with chief executive Wendell Weeks saying the segment outpaced GPU unit growth 1.

This desk previewed Corning's $585 million AI fiber capacity bet on October 25 and asked whether the earnings would justify it. The segment table filed today is the first answer, and it shows where the plan is working and where it is not.

AI optics drove the growth; Solar and Glass Innovations did not

The complication sits two segments down the income statement. Solar, the business Weeks has promised will build a revenue stream of more than $3 billion, was flat sequentially at $436 million and swung to a $7 million net loss, down from a $30 million profit a year ago, on a production ramp the company itself calls slower than anticipated 1. Management also flagged a tailwind that is not demand: US trade action under Section 232 improves pricing for US-made solar product 1.

Glass Innovations, the consumer glass arm, fell 3% year over year to $1.506 billion as TV, notebook and smartphone markets took a memory-pricing hit, and its net income dropped 10% 1.

The valuation prices the AI leg, not the stalled legs

The market is charging full price for the AI leg anyway. Shares closed at $127.74 on October 26, 87.9% above GuruFocus's GF Value estimate of $68.00, with insiders having sold $112.2 million of stock over the past twelve months and bought none 3.

On September 11 Corning announced a $2 billion at-the-market equity offering with Goldman Sachs+2.18% — Goldman Sachs, up 2.18 percent today, and the stock fell 13.7% to $143.60 by the September 14 close; Pomerantz LLP is now investigating whether officers misled investors 4.

The counterpoint is real. Q4 guidance calls for core sales of $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion and EPS of $0.96 to $1.00, and four new multibillion-dollar customer agreements, including Verizon+1.89% — Verizon, up 1.89 percent today and AT&T+0.98% — AT&T, up 0.98 percent today, underpin the AI side 1.

Adjusted free cash flow reached $2.27 billion through nine months, but a plan that doubles sales to a $40 billion run rate by 2030 cannot ride one segment 1. The watch item is short and dated: the Solar line in the Q4 print, due early 2027 1. Flat again, and the diversification story is the next thing to reprice.
