Lithuania hands a $3.7B drone startup a NATO beachhead for a signature

A signature on NATO's eastern flank

Lithuania's defence minister Robertas Kaunas and Mach Industries president Nathan Diller signed a joint declaration on 23 September 2026 aimed at establishing drone systems production in Lithuania, including systems "already tested in Ukraine under real combat conditions" ¹. Kaunas pitched geography: proximity to Ukraine, membership in NATO and the EU, a staging point for advanced US defence technology on the alliance's eastern flank ¹².

Three years of receipts buy a seat

The leverage behind the pen is buying power. Lithuania has bought about €2 billion of US weapons and military equipment over three years, the largest such purchaser among the Baltic states ¹. The declaration seeks a Mach branch and production capacity for advanced defence systems, output that "could be used to strengthen Ukraine's defence" once the necessary conditions are met ¹²³.

The paper binds nobody

The complication is the document itself. The ministry's release names no investment size, no jobs figure and no timeline, and hedges every Ukraine delivery behind conditions still to be satisfied ¹. Hosting rights are being granted before any contract exists.

A $900 million private war chest

Mach arrives with venture money, not a Pentagon production line. On 10 September 2026 it announced a $600 million Series C continuation at a $3.7 billion valuation ⁴¹¹, doubling June's $1.8 billion, itself quadruple the $470 million valuation of June 2025 ⁵⁶. Ribbit, Bedrock, Infinite Capital and Sequoia backed both tranches ⁴. Washington has started paying anyway: the Defense Innovation Unit picked Mach in July to lead aircraft integration for a maritime expeditionary strike program, and its Viper loitering munition draws on lessons from Ukraine's war ⁷.

The $61 billion shadow

The fair version of the deal exists. Founder Ethan Thornton says Lithuania understands that deterrence needs "the capacity to produce it at scale", and Vilnius has converted paper into factories before, landing a Ukrainian ammunition plant promising up to 450 jobs in August ¹. The counterweight is scale: Anduril closed $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation in May ⁸, and Shield AI is in talks at $20 billion, up from $12.7 billion in March ⁹. At $3.7 billion, Mach sells access instead: NATO-flank production, Ukraine-adjacent testing, and a government that signed its own drone deal with Kyiv in May to localize Ukrainian drone production ¹⁰. Kaunas's same US itinerary included Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Palantir and Epirus ¹.

What would make it real

Three numbers would turn intent into news: an investment figure, a site, a first order from Vilnius or Kyiv. Until one appears, both sides own a signature and no factory.
