Replit's exit from Anthropic's top five lands the same week Anthropic asks the market for $750 billion
Amjad Masad says Replit was a top-five Anthropic customer until it moved its default to OpenAI this week. Anthropic's S-1, out the same week, asks public buyers to fund up to $750 billion of compute on a two-customer concentration story.

Amjad Masad stood on the TechCrunch Disrupt stage on October 16 and said the quiet part loud: Replit~$3B — Replit, private, latest valuation ~$3B, the browser-based coding platform where users build and deploy apps, was no longer working with Anthropic 1. Replit had been, until recently, one of Anthropic's$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B top five customers, he said 1. Three days later in the same week, Anthropic's draft S-1 landed, asking public buyers to fund compute commitments that could reach $750 billion 36.
The default seat is the whole business
Masad cited cost, performance and partnership. "I think ChatGPT is better now," he said, pointing to internal and public benchmarks where OpenAI's$1.18T — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $1.18T Sol and Astra beat Claude at building apps from scratch 1. Replit struck its OpenAI partnership in August 2026, and OpenAI is now the default model powering Replit Agent, Claude still selectable 14. The company later walked back the "no longer working with" line: Replit remains model agnostic, and insiders told TechCrunch the Anthropic partnership is still in place 14.
That walkback misses the point. Most customers stick with the default rather than choosing a model, so the default captures the routine spend 12. A top-five account just moved its heaviest traffic to a rival with one configuration change, without breaking any contract.
The mix that explains the timing
The same interview carries numbers nobody has run as a money story. Enterprise was 2% of Replit's revenue last year; it is about 15% this year, and more than half of revenue is B2B 15. Masad expects enterprise and government to pass half of revenue in 2027 15.

Enterprise buyers, and the contracts that come with them, decide which model sits in the default seat and whose spend sits in Replit's cost base. The switch lands the same week that mix crossed its inflection. A prior Inference piece covered Replit's cost pressure after its storage bill arrived first; what is new here is the customer mix behind the move 1.
What it costs Anthropic in public
Anthropic's draft S-1 shows $16.3 billion of first-half revenue, up from $1.1 billion a year earlier, and an $80.7 billion loss, of which about $72 billion is a non-cash accounting charge on convertible notes 67. Around 20 to 25% of first-half revenue came from just two unnamed customers, and the filing expects concentration to persist 67.

Compute and cloud commitments exceed $600 billion, including $111 billion with Google and $110 billion with AWS, potentially $750 billion 678. Anthropic is expected to list in November at a valuation investors are weighing near $1.5 trillion 78. Its own filing says cloud partners increasingly see it as a competitor and declined to supply all the capacity it sought 78.

Masad's headline line, "they were a better partner for now", carries a message Anthropic's S-1 does not print: frontier-model spend is conditional 1. The two-customer concentration is disclosed. What no document shows is whether any large customer, Replit's size or larger, is negotiating its way off the platforms that fund those $600 billion commitments 1.
What to watch
Whether Replit publishes the benchmark scores behind "better now", whether Anthropic's roadshow pricing absorbs the default-loss story, and whether the S-1's two unnamed customers are still two when the prospectus goes final.
