Xperi's 7.7 million cars now deliver radio ratings in 550 markets as Nielsen loses its audited label in 22

Xperi's AutoStage portal now turns 7.7 million cars into next-day radio ratings across 550 U.S. markets, days after Nielsen's radio ratings lost their audited label in 22. The open question is whether free data converts into a paying measurement business.

A connected-car dashboard runs its FM radio during a vehicle technology demonstration in Detroit in 2025. Xperi's AutoStage portal turns dashboards like this one into next-day radio audience measurement across 550 markets.

Radio measurement is being rebuilt from the car dashboard, and the industry's audit body just made room for the builder. On October 20, Xperi+1.37% — Xperi, up 1.37 percent today, the NYSE-listed company behind the DTS and TiVo brands, said its DTS AutoStage Broadcaster Portal now spans 550 U.S. markets 1. The numbers come from 7.7 million cars, published the day after people listen 1.

Four days earlier, the Media Rating Council, which audits ratings services, revoked Nielsen's Audio PPM accreditation in Baltimore, Jacksonville, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and denied it in 18 more markets 3. The gap Xperi is filling was never New York; it is the 173 markets in its footprint that had no audience measurement at all 1.

The car counts what the panel never did

AutoStage is the entertainment layer inside connected dashboards, and the portal aggregates what those radios actually play, with every new market drawing on at least 1,600 vehicles 1. Nielsen's portable people meter infers a market from a panel of volunteers carrying a device; this is closer to a census of the radios themselves, the deterministic-device shift that already reshaped television measurement.

A station in a small town "can now see its audience data with the same clarity as a station in New York or Los Angeles," says Joe D'Angelo, Xperi's senior vice president of commercial strategy and partnerships 1. Standard-tier access is free, which is the acquisition strategy in plain sight. Xperi demonstrates the expanded portal at NAB Show New York on October 21 and 22 1.

Nielsen's lost label is the opening

The MRC decision does not stop Nielsen selling PPM; it strips the audited label from the ratings that set radio ad prices in those markets 34. Into that gap walks Cumulus Media, one of the largest U.S. radio groups, first commercial licensee of the Premium tier in July 2026 and now deployed across its local markets, with Zoellner Media Group and Seven Mountains Media following 12.

Cumulus is also the plaintiff suing Nielsen: the Second Circuit affirmed an injunction against Nielsen's policy of tying purchases of national ratings to local ones, and Nielsen petitioned the Supreme Court on September 15 5. The broadcaster paying for the alternative is the same one litigating the incumbent.

Conversion is the constraint now

Coverage is no longer the limit; trust is, and no public document yet shows advertisers treating dashboard data as currency. Xperi needs the conversion, because licensing, most of its revenue, grew 3.4 percent last quarter 6. The advertising-related line where AutoStage's listener-analytics revenue is booked still earns about $15 million a quarter, against a larger cost line 6.

The company returned to growth only this year, after five shrinking quarters 8. The first test arrives on November 4, when Xperi reports third-quarter results 7: if the portal is becoming a second engine, it has to show up there. The cars were always collecting this. The value belongs to whoever turns their exhaust into the price local radio trades on, and that work is now visibly Xperi's.
