Agents launch 17 million databases a day on Databricks; the line they feed makes $100 million

A new a16z essay adds the first usage numbers under Databricks' $190 billion August mark: agents now out-query humans on the platform and launch 17 million databases a day. The agent-native product line they feed is about 1.4% of a $7 billion run rate.

The agents now out-query the humans

On October 27, venture firm Andreessen Horowitz published "Databricks & the Future of the Firm," an essay by its co-founder Ben Horowitz, who sits on the data-and-AI platform's board, and writer Michael McGuiness 1. Its new numbers measure activity, not billings.

AI agents, programs that act rather than chat, now send more queries than people across Databricks$216.58B — Databricks, private, latest valuation $216.58B and launch more than 17 million databases a day 1; three years ago, every interaction on the platform was human 1. The thesis: Databricks becomes what chief executive Ali Ghodsi calls a "system of record for agents," the layer that tells an AI what is true, what it may touch and whether the work was good 1.

Usage is not yet revenue

The agent-native line that activity runs on is Lakebase, a serverless Postgres product that arrived with the roughly $1 billion Neon acquisition in May 2025, and it has crossed a $100 million annualized run rate 12. That is about one dollar in seventy of Databricks' $7 billion total 3. The Lakehouse warehouse line is past $1.5 billion, growing more than 100% a year 14.

The split is not new; it came with August's $5 billion round 34. The usage numbers are the essay's addition, and the source is interested: a16z led Databricks' 2013 Series A 1, and the Justice Department has spent nearly a year probing the firm's Databricks board seat under the Clayton Act 5.

From February to August the run rate rose 29.6% while the valuation rose 41.8%, to $190 billion, or 27 times run rate 7. Databricks sized the raise at $1 billion and drew $15 billion of interest 3. PitchBook values the operating business at $68.7 billion, a 64% discount, and its most optimistic case lands at $182.1 billion 7.

The case the essay actually makes

The bulls have receipts too. Grounding agents in the company's ontology lifted answer accuracy from about 50% to 84.5% in Databricks' own testing, and Novo Nordisk−1.55% — Novo Nordisk, down 1.55 percent today scientists now query trial data through Genie, the natural-language interface 1. Ghodsi calls AGI "already here," with context, not intelligence, the bottleneck 9, and expects Lakebase to become "a bigger market in the long run than the existing database market" 1. Databricks also held positive adjusted free cash flow across the past twelve months 4. None of that shows the conversion from usage to billings.

What to watch

Anthropic$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B filed its prospectus on October 26, and a November Nasdaq debut under the ticker ANT will reprice every private AI mark, this one included 10. The tell is the next printed Lakebase run rate: 17 million databases a day is the demand, and $100 million is what it bills so far 10.

Snowflake priced its coding agent at $6.34 a trial, and the mode that won stays internal

Snowflake's October 27 benchmark, built from 65 of its own merged pull requests, discloses for the first time what an AI coding agent costs per task inside its product, and shows the winning mode is not for sale. The December print now has to answer whether Snowflake can bill for the outcome rather than the compute behind it.
