Ameren's Q3 beat came from warm weather; its $38.1 billion grid plan has no named customer
Ameren's third-quarter beat, a fresh 2027 guide and an 8% to 10% growth promise to 2031 read like an AI-power story, but the release credits the quarter to warmer weather while the segment that earns on the grid buildout shrank.

The beat was weather, not data centers
Ameren+0.37% — Ameren, up 0.37 percent today, the St. Louis utility holding company, reported third-quarter net income of $676 million on November 5, or $2.42 per diluted share against $2.35 a year ago, beating the Zacks consensus of $2.29 on revenue of $2.88 billion 13. But the release itself credits the gain in its Missouri unit to "warmer temperatures" and lower income tax expense, and both the raised 2026 guide of $5.35 to $5.55 and the new 2027 guide of $5.70 to $5.90 assume normal weather 1.
The segment that monetizes the buildout fell
The transmission business, which earns rate-regulated returns on new grid infrastructure, earned $110 million in the quarter against $151 million a year earlier, and the parent company's loss widened to $81 million on higher interest expense 1. Infrastructure spending is running hot: capital expenditures of $4.1 billion in nine months against $2.2 billion of operating cash flow 1. That gap gets financed with debt and customers' future bills.
The $38.1 billion promise needs a payer
Management put a price on the five-year story: $38.1 billion of planned infrastructure investment driving rate base growth of about 13.3% a year through 2031, and EPS compounding 8% to 10% off a $5.80 2027 midpoint 1. The release names no large customers for that build, only a reference to agreements signed in 2026 1. The Missouri certificate-of-need request behind part of it is still working through a public intervention deadline at the state commission 2.
The market paid for the promise anyway
The stock closed at $112.81 on November 5, up 13% this year and about 2% under the $115.06 average analyst target, even as Reuters flagged Ameren among defensive utilities investors shift into when data-center curbs threaten the sector 34. Until a named customer signs, the 13.3% is a hope with a dividend attached 34.
