Five9's AI number is $39 million or undisclosed, depending on who counted

Five9 reports on November 5 with two write-ups of the same quarter disagreeing about its headline AI number, a gross margin that paid for the AI land-grab, and Microsoft's agents now plugging into its platform.

Five9+0.69% — Five9, up 0.69 percent today reports on November 5, and the quarter it will discuss has a hole in it 1. Two write-ups of the same August release disagree about the number carrying the story. CMSWire puts second-quarter AI revenue at $39 million, 15% of subscription revenue, up from 9% a year earlier and growing 78% 1. Kalkine's read of the same release says no dollar figure was disclosed at all, so the claim cannot be sized from the document 2. One of the two counted wrong, and investors find out which on Wednesday.

The AI is real, and it is eating the margin

The reported quarter is solid. Revenue of $312.4 million rose 10%, subscription revenue 14%, GAAP net income $3.4 million 2. But the cost of the AI story sits in the gross margin: adjusted gross margin fell to 61% from 63% after Five9 temporarily added professional services staff to deploy AI customers faster than planned 1. CEO Amit Mathradas says AI revenue is accelerating even faster than subscription revenue 2. The acceleration depends on that temporary services headcount, and the third quarter shows whether the margin drag repeats when the hiring stops 12.

Gross margin fell to 53.4% in Q2 2026, the lowest in two years

Microsoft is knocking on the same door

While Five9 defends the platform, Microsoft−0.90% — Microsoft, down 0.90 percent today is layering on top 3. Contact Center Intelligence, now in public preview, connects to Five9, Cisco Webex and Avaya and bills through Copilot Credits 3. Microsoft entered the Gartner+3.09% — Gartner, up 3.09 percent today contact-center Magic Quadrant as a Visionary 3 and offered roughly 60,000 staff a voluntary exit to fund the push 3. Five9's largest Q2 deal, about $100 million with a Fortune 100 financial services company, covers the platform only, AI still to be determined 1.

A judge has already heard Five9's guidance before

The disputes are not new ground for the company. In February a federal judge let securities-fraud claims over Five9's 2024 revenue guidance proceed, and insiders sold over $8 million in stock during the period before the stock fell 26% 4. Full-year guidance stands at $1.260 billion to $1.272 billion of revenue and $3.22 to $3.30 of non-GAAP earnings per share 2.

What the November 5 print decides

Holders have done well: the stock is up 87.6% this year, and our October 24 piece covered Voss Capital trimming 28.4% of its stake for $47 million into that rise 6. Nothing in the AI-revenue dispute settles the bull or bear case on its own; what settles it is whether the number is sized and profitable.

The decision rule for Wednesday's print is concrete. If Five9 puts a dollar figure on AI revenue that grows from $39 million without more services headcount, the margin story has a floor 124. If the figure is again unsized or the gross margin drops below 61%, the acceleration is being bought, and a company already facing fraud claims over its guidance has little room to leave numbers vague 124.
