Hubbell's data-center quarter: Electrical Solutions up 51%, guidance raised, debt doubled to fund it

The grid-and-electrical supplier beat estimates and raised guidance on data-center demand, but the growth was partly bought: debt doubled and interest expense quadrupled to fund $3 billion of acquisitions.

Hubbell−4.81% — Hubbell, down 4.81 percent today shipped $1.87 billion of hardware in the third quarter, up 25% from a year earlier, and beat the street: adjusted EPS of $5.91 cleared the $5.75 consensus, and revenue topped the $1.85 billion estimate 13. The growth engine was Electrical Solutions, up 51% to $845 million, with organic sales up 22% "led by strong datacenter markets," in the words of CEO Gerben Bakker 1. The wiring, enclosures and components that connect AI data centers to the grid just printed their best quarter of the boom.

Guidance up, dividend up, margins wider

Margins and cash flow moved the same direction as sales. Adjusted operating margin expanded 160 basis points to 25.5%, and free cash flow reached $280 million against $254 million a year ago 1.

Management raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $20.40 to $20.60, attributing the move primarily to stronger anticipated Electrical Solutions growth; the release does not quantify the prior range, so the size of the raise has to be read from the direction, not the delta 1. Four days before the print, the board lifted the quarterly dividend 7% to $1.52, payable December 15 2. Raising the payout four days before the print signals management expected the beat.

Revenue reached $1.87 billion in Q3 2026, up 25% year over year

The debt that bought the growth

The complication sits on the balance sheet. Total debt more than doubled to $5.12 billion and net debt to total capital hit 51%, up from 28% at year end, after $3.0 billion of acquisition spending in nine months 1. Interest expense ran $58.0 million this quarter against $13.6 million a year earlier 1. Acquisitions added 13 points of the quarter's 25% sales growth 1. Hubbell bought its way to this growth; utilities and data-center operators pay for the components, and shareholders carry the leverage.

The risk Hubbell names itself

The release lists, among the factors that could hurt results, "continued strength in datacenter markets, notwithstanding certain opposition" 1. In plain terms, the company treats opposition to data-center building as a threat to the very demand driving this growth, and Grid Automation already shrank about 4% in the quarter 1. Watch the backlog build and the Electrical Solutions organic rate into Q4 1. The AI trade now runs through conduit and enclosures.
