Hyperscalers set the socket, Infineon ships, Renesas waits until mid-2027

Renesas answered Infineon's 800V power push with an industry-first GaN package and committed capital in Kuala Lumpur. The rack-power race finally has a shipping date, and the buyers who defined the footprint hold the terms.

Inside a power semiconductor module: the switching dies and bond wires that move power between conversion stages. Renesas and Infineon are racing to put gallium nitride and silicon carbide into these sockets for 800V AI racks.

Renesas put its answer on the table today: the industry's first 650-volt gallium nitride switch in a dual-side-cooled 8x8mm package, 57% smaller than the 10x15mm TOLT footprint, aimed at the converter that steps 800-volt DC down to a rack's 48V, 12V and 6V rails. Cooling from both faces lets more power share scarce board space. Samples are with AI data-center makers now, and mass production is planned for mid-2027. 1

Every conversion stage removed is the prize

The socket Renesas is chasing is being standardized in the open. Google, Microsoft and Nvidia are writing 800VDC requirements through the Open Compute Project, down to a workstream that turns medium-voltage grid power straight into 800 volts DC. 2 Each conversion stage between the grid and a sub-1V die loses power as heat, which is why solid-state transformers on silicon carbide are replacing iron-core units at the wall while GaN takes the fast-switching stages inside the rack. 3 Infineon's power chief Peter Wawer frames the demand: racks near 125 kilowatts today, 500 kilowatts next, then a megawatt on 800VDC. 3

Infineon holds both shipping ends

The rivals moved in the same week. On 29 September Eaton agreed to take Infineon's silicon carbide for its medium-voltage solid-state transformers across Asia-Pacific, cutting the stages between grid and rack. 4 On 28 September, trade press detailed Infineon's dual-phase power stages for accelerators, 120 amps continuous and 300 at peak, sampling now, with vertical delivery from beneath the processor. 5 The Elec names Renesas, TI, Analog Devices and Monolithic Power as the chasing pack. 5

The buyers wrote the footprint

Renesas pitches a single-source path to 800V designs, but the terms belong to its customers. The company says the new footprint was defined in collaboration with major AI infrastructure customers for sourcing flexibility, so any qualified vendor can fill the socket the buyers specified. 1 The open OCP spec pulls the same direction: equipment built to a common standard, like servers. 2 Substitutability caps what any supplier can charge, and the hyperscalers and ODMs collect that benefit whoever wins the socket.

Renesas shareholders fund the wait

The committed money is Renesas's, and it is the only committed money in this story. On 29 September, Renesas Semiconductor KL managing director Tee Kean Soon said the Malaysian plant will explore AI-product manufacturing within two years with RM700 million, about $170 million at 4.1 ringgit to the dollar, a disclosure that has not surfaced in English-language coverage. 67 Renesas's manufacturing chief used the same event to point at light-off, minimal-human production. 6 Infineon's head start is partly in the price: up 54% this year, yet more than a third below its June peak, with Bernstein at Outperform and Morgan Stanley cutting to Equalweight on limited AI-power upside. 8

The test dates are October, then mid-2027

Until this week, the 800V trade was a mood. From today it has a date and a sum, which makes it testable: Renesas shows the parts at OCP Global Summit in San Jose on 12-15 October, where this ecosystem gathers. 1 ODM qualification is the link that decides whether mid-2027 holds. If it holds, Renesas earns a socket the buyers kept deliberately contestable; until then, Infineon banks the shipping positions. Every watt saved in conversion flows into the cost of a token, and that is why this unglamorous layer, and the Malaysian lines automating toward light-off, decides who profits from AI's build-out.
