Nvidia's $3 billion prepayment buys a factory that opens in 2028

Nvidia is prepaying Amkor $3 billion across Arizona and South Korea for packaging capacity that opens in 2028. Lam Research's cleanroom warning explains why the customer pays two years early, and tonight's earnings show whether the shortage has reached Amkor's order book.

The $1.3 billion South Korea agreement announced on October 21, on top of July's $1.5 billion Arizona prepayment, buys Amkor's place in a queue, not chips already rolling 123.

Nvidia is prepaying for a cleanroom that opens in 2028

The detail that dates the money: Amkor's $12 billion Peoria, Arizona campus does not open its cleanroom until early 2028 5. Nvidia is prepaying two years ahead because that is how long the bottleneck runs. Amkor cannot bridge the wait on its own; fiscal 2025 capex of $900 million against roughly $1.1 billion of annual operating cash leaves about $200 million of free cash flow, so the customer is financing the factory 3.

The market split over the same fact. Amkor rose 7.1% on the deal, then fell 10.1% the next session after Lam Research said equipment makers cannot meet demand through 2027 because of cleanroom and component shortages 24. Both moves read the same signal: capacity is scarce. The bull case says prepayments prove demand and fund the build; the bear case says the cash lands against 2028 revenue while Amkor, having broken its stock with weak July guidance, still has to execute 36.

One layer down, orders already run at 2.5 times sales

TTM Technologies+9.24% — TTM Technologies, up 9.24 percent today reported commercial board orders at 2.5 times sales, with laminate and glass lead times of 12 to 24 weeks and rising, and its new lines mostly serve 2028 8. Amkor reports fiscal Q3 after the close on October 26, its first print since July, and the closest read on whether packaging shows the same gap 36.

Consensus sees Amkor earnings rising 71% in fiscal 2026

Shares closed Friday at $39.30, well below their 52-week high, at about 13.9 times forward earnings against a 16.0 five-year average, with consensus expecting normalized earnings to jump 71% this year 367. The prepayments turn that build from speculative into customer-funded. What to watch tonight: whether bookings run ahead of shipments. If they do, Nvidia is buying scarce capacity. If not, this is a two-year wait financed by a customer with other packagers.
