Wall Street values Talen at $514. Its own wells found arsenic.

A federal judge is letting a citizen suit proceed over arsenic in groundwater beside Talen Energy's Brunner Island coal plant, 500 feet from the Susquehanna. The AI-power favorite trades near $303 with a $514 bull case, and the cost of cleaning up Basin 5 is the one number nobody carries.

An ash basin the size of the Superdome, 500 feet from the river

Brunner Island, a 65-year-old coal-and-gas plant in York County, Pennsylvania, holds its coal ash in seven unlined basins 1. Basin 5 carries 5.5 million cubic yards of it, about a fifth more than the interior volume of the New Orleans Superdome, stacked up to 40 feet deep with 15 feet below the water table 2.

The river 500 feet away sends about 19 million gallons a minute into the Chesapeake Bay, and the bill lands there: a major fishing hub and habitat for federally threatened and endangered species 1. This week Judge Keli M. Neary declined to dismiss a citizen suit over the basin, writing that, per the complaint, Basin 5 "is leaching arsenic" into groundwater and the plant "should be taking certain remedial measures it is currently not taking" 12.

The nuclear plant upriver carries the ticker

Talen's investment case runs on a different plant on the same river: the Susquehanna nuclear station, 2.5 gigawatts, 90% owned, typically about half the company's output 3. Talen sold the adjacent data center campus to Amazon for $650 million in 2024 and now supplies AWS up to 1,920 megawatts under an expanded nuclear deal 34.

Goldman Sachs says the Amazon pact "structurally transformed" the company, and 14 of 16 analysts rate the shares a buy or outperform 5. The stock closed at $303.43 on 25 September 6; Morgan Stanley's target is $514, the street average $458 78.

The quarter missed, and the stock rose anyway

Second-quarter earnings were a $2.00 per-share loss against $3.28 expected, on $747 million of revenue against $831 million forecast: a $92 million net loss 679. The shares rose 2.57% the next day; the same release raised 2026 guidance, with quarterly adjusted EBITDA of $374 million against $90 million a year earlier 69. That follows a 2025 in which Talen lost $219 million on $2.58 billion of revenue 3; the stock was down 23% this year as of late August 4.

Talen's own wells did the indicting

The suit's receipts are Talen's own. First-quarter 2024 monitoring found high levels of lithium, aluminum, arsenic, molybdenum and manganese in groundwater wells downstream of Basin 5 2. Plaintiffs say the plant never built the groundwater sampling program the EPA requires and never posted the public disclosures that tell people what is in the water they fish and swim in 2. The ask is a compliance order, not damages 12.

Talen has an exit date for coal, not a price tag for Basin 5

New ash now goes to a lined landfill, coal burning halts every May through September, and coal ends entirely by 2028 under a 2018 Sierra Club settlement 1. Talen declined to comment on the litigation 1. Jefferies downgraded the stock to hold on valuation in June 5. The cost of bringing Basin 5 into compliance is the one number no filing carries.

Watch November 3

Talen reports on 3 November, with analysts expecting $10.18 a share on $1.35 billion of revenue 6. The case now moves toward the compliance order the plaintiffs seek 12. The AI trade prices the reactor; the river gets the basin.
