Dinning studied at the University of Washington, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1984, and earned a PhD in computer science from New York University's Courant Institute. She joined the D. E. Shaw group in 1990 as a quantitative researcher in equity arbitrage, as one of its first 20 employees, and from 1995 to 1999 ran the firm's worldwide asset management activities.
She was one of the six senior managing directors to whom David E. Shaw handed day-to-day leadership in 2002. The firm's leadership page now lists her as chair of the executive committee, jointly supervising its businesses worldwide and overseeing corporate development and DESCOvery, its venture studio. Over her career she has led strategies including energy, benchmark-relative equities and long-short equities, helped form DESIM, its investment management unit, and served on its risk committee for much of that time.
She received the 2006 Industry Leadership Award from 100 Women in Hedge Funds and in 2007 was appointed to the Asset Managers' Committee of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets. She sits on the boards of the Robin Hood Foundation, Partners In Health and Code.org, and on MIT's visiting committee for electrical engineering and computer science.
