Overdeck won a silver medal at the 1986 International Mathematical Olympiad, at 16, and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's in statistics at Stanford University. He began his career at D.E. Shaw & Co., where he became a managing director, and then spent two years as a vice president at Amazon.com.
He co-founded Two Sigma in 2001 with David Siegel. The firm applies data and computing to investing, and its largest business is a hedge fund; it manages more than $75 billion. Two Sigma Investments, LP's 13F for June 2026 listed about $138 billion of US-listed securities, including options. On 30 September 2024 he stepped down as co-CEO and as chief investment officer of Two Sigma Investments, staying on as co-chairman. He returned to the firm's management committee in 2025, and the firm's Form ADV lists him as co-chairman and an executive manager of Two Sigma Management, its general partner.
The founders' disagreement over the firm's leadership has continued. Overdeck picked Carter Lyons as one of the two co-CEOs in 2024. When Siegel's representative on the management committee, Seth Platt, moved to remove Lyons in 2026, Overdeck placed the termination into dispute resolution, so it cannot take effect without committee agreement or arbitration, according to the Form ADV.
Overdeck and his wife, Laura, set up the Overdeck Family Foundation in 2011 to fund education research and STEM learning; Forbes says more than $500 million has gone through it. Forbes also says he chairs the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and put his net worth at about $9.3 billion in October 2026.
