Truell studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics, and worked as an intern at Octant. In 2022 he co-founded Anysphere with three friends from MIT. One of them, Aman Sanger, had been his classmate at New York City's Horace Mann School.
Anysphere's product, Cursor, is a code editor that uses AI models to write and edit chunks of code. Millions of software developers use it, including at Nvidia, Adobe, Uber and Shopify. Before its sale, Cursor said it had more than $1 billion in annualized revenue, which made it one of the fastest-growing AI startups.
In August 2026 SpaceX acquired Cursor for $60 billion, and Truell remains chief executive of Anysphere. Cursor runs models from other AI labs. OpenAI is ending model access through Cursor on November 12, 2026; Truell puts OpenAI models at about 5% of Cursor's traffic. Cursor has also stopped bundling Claude, and Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown has said his company will add compute for Claude in Cursor.
