Capital Group's board elected Gitlin president and chief executive in October 2023, when Tim Armour retired as chairman and CEO after 40 years at the firm. Martin Romo became chairman and chief investment officer at the same time. Gitlin works on long-term strategy and the client side of the business, while Romo oversees the firm's investment process.
Gitlin joined Capital Group about eleven years ago and led its fixed income business as a partner at Capital Fixed Income Investors. Before that he was head of fixed income at T. Rowe Price, where he had earlier been global head of trading. His earlier career was on the trading and sales side: head of US equity sales at Citigroup Global Markets, head of Asia-Pacific trading at Credit Suisse Asset Management, and a trader of Japanese equities and bonds at George Weiss and Associates.
He is a director of Capital Research and Management Company, the Capital Group adviser whose equity divisions, Capital World Investors and Capital Research Global Investors, file their own 13F reports. He holds a bachelor's degree from Colgate University and works from Los Angeles.
