Krieger was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and moved to California in 2004 to attend Stanford University, where he majored in symbolic systems. At Stanford he met Kevin Systrom. The two first planned a check-in app, then narrowed it to photos, and co-founded Instagram in 2010. In the early days Krieger built most of the engineering and the user experience himself.
Krieger served as Instagram's chief technology officer until 2018. After Facebook bought the company, he worked to build and grow Instagram as an independent product inside it. During his time as CTO, Instagram's user base grew from a few million to 1 billion monthly active users. Krieger resigned in September 2018. Krieger and Systrom kept working together. In April 2020 they launched Rt.live, a tracker of how fast COVID-19 was spreading in each US state. In January 2023 they launched Artifact, an AI-powered news app for iPhone and Android; they announced its shutdown in January 2024.
In May 2024 Krieger announced that he was joining Anthropic as chief product officer. He joined the board of Figma in July 2025 and resigned from it in April 2026. In January 2026, according to Wikipedia, he joined Anthropic's Labs team; company records still list him as chief product officer.
