Amex rented a million Airbnb homes and the receipt is still missing
The October 22 deal puts a million Airbnb listings inside a portal that held 3,400 hotels and pays Airbnb in loyalty currency, not cash it will name; a month later Airbnb strips hosts of the chore lever. Someone is paying for the clean, and the filings do not say who.

A card portal that carried 3,400 hotel properties across 116 countries woke up on October 22 with more than a million Airbnb listings inside it, about 300 times the shelf 3515. American Express+0.15% — American Express, up 0.15 percent today calls it a perk: 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on prepaid Platinum bookings 35, the $600 credit renamed from Hotel to Lodging and opened to prepaid Airbnb−1.01% — Airbnb, down 1.01 percent today Luxe stays of two nights or more, and a new $250 credit for Airbnb Experiences that only a confirmed Luxe booking unlocks 15.
Chief executive Stephen Squeri put the deal on the October 23 earnings call 1.
Read the plumbing, not the brochure: Airbnb keeps the mess, Amex keeps the customer
Three details decide what this contract is worth. First, Membership Rewards points cannot be redeemed for Airbnb bookings, only earned 3. Second, bookings complete on Airbnb, and the host relationship does not migrate: cardholders must use Airbnb's platform to message the host, change or cancel, or get support 25.
Third, no disclosed take rate: an Airbnb spokesperson declined to detail the partnership's business model or financial impact 6. Airbnb closes every sale and cedes only the search shelf; Amex buys the premium end, since the $600 reaches only Luxe and the $250 only Experiences 13. Skift reads it as Airbnb's deepest loyalty tie-up yet, beyond the tracked-link deals it ran for a decade with Qantas, Delta and British Airways 6.

The chore ban lands first: hosts pay for the clean a month before the card demand arrives
On November 20 Airbnb stops letting hosts require chores a cleaner would do; guests can be asked to put dishes in the sink, not wash them 4. Hosts already charge cleaning fees, so the clean comes out of price or margin, and some are suspending listings in protest 4.
Roughly 60% of US travelers prefer hotels and about 60% of those cite no cleaning rules or fees 4. The quarter that invited premium card demand into its inventory is the quarter it asked its own hosts to fund the hospitality. Airbnb booked $3.6 billion of revenue in Q2 2026 4.
Q4 is the season the deal has to show up in: quarterly revenue has swung between $2.1 billion and $4.1 billion over the past two years 7. Watch revenue per booked night, the Experiences attach rate, and host delisting after November 20 7. The bill for the clean, like the bill for the points, is not printed on the press release.
