Beckhoff's Schirmer breaks ground on its biggest factory in 47 years as German machinery falls a fourth year

The Verl maker of profile-machining centers, owned by Beckhoff since 2016, started the largest investment of its life on October 21, the same month two niche peers filed for insolvency. Nothing in it trades on a market, and that is what makes the counter-signal clean.

Schirmer Maschinen, a maker of profile-machining centers owned by the automation group Beckhoff since 2016, broke ground on October 21 on the largest investment of its 47-year history: a factory campus in Verl with capacity for up to 550 jobs 12. German machinery is heading for a fourth straight year of falling output, in a month when two niche machine builders filed for insolvency 345. The industry average has stopped describing where demand for automation actually sits.

The build consolidates as much as it expands

Construction has started on four connected production halls around Schirmer's two existing buildings at Stahlstrasse, taking the site to 28,500 square metres; production moves in from autumn 2027 126. Managing director Ludger Martinschledde calls the outlay a significant double-digit-million-euro sum for buildings and machines 1. Consolidation matters as much as growth: 160 jobs now working in rented Gütersloh halls come home to Verl 1. The 550 figure is building capacity, and Schirmer names no hiring target 2.

The niche kept selling while the industry shrank

Schirmer's machining centers saw, drill, mill and pack profiles of PVC, aluminium and steel for customers from window makers to facade, furniture, solar, rail and aviation suppliers 17. Revenue doubled between 2019 and 2024, rose again in 2025, and Martinschledde puts the new site's potential far higher 1. The window maker IDEAL Fensterbau, a customer, credits Schirmer automation with up to 35 percent more production capacity 7.

Revenue kept rising through the slump, and management sees 150 million euros as possible

The aggregate runs the other way. The VDMA, Germany's machinery industry association, cut its 2026 forecast to a real decline of 2 percent, the fourth in a row 3. The first half of 2026 cost the industry about 21,500 jobs 3. In the week of the groundbreaking, 117-year-old Vollmer of Biberach, which had stopped a planned factory as its costs climbed, filed for insolvency 4. Maschinenbau Leicht of Hallstadt followed days later, its administrator citing an acute liquidity gap despite full order books 5.

A factory that is also a test bed

What makes this more than a property story is the owner. Beckhoff Automation, the family-held, unlisted Verl group behind PC-based industrial control, has owned Schirmer outright since 2016 and describes it as the group's lead customer, where new automation technologies are "implemented and tested" 8. Hans Beckhoff, who founded the group and bought Schirmer when it came up for sale a third time, calls the subsidiary a laboratory where Beckhoff tries things out 1.

The tie predates the purchase: Beckhoff delivered Schirmer's first machine controller in 1981, and control features worked out on Schirmer's lines became the basis of Beckhoff's general control technology 8. The group's product range now runs through machine vision to artificial intelligence 8. Read that way, the new halls are a bigger bench for proving control technology before it transfers to other industries 8.

Nothing here trades, and that is the point

Beckhoff earned 1.24 billion euros across its group in 2025 and answers to a family rather than a market 8; nothing in this story prints on an exchange. The read for investors is the split inside the industry: premium niche automation kept selling through the slump while thinly capitalized builders failed, and the VDMA expects growth to return in 2027, the year the halls open 3.

For the region, the demand is posted today: Schirmer is hiring industrial mechanics, mechatronics engineers and designers now 2. Capacity built into the trough is on hand when the turn comes.
