Block's 32% margin promise runs on pricier credit, not the AI Jack Dorsey is selling

Block's first detailed 2027 guide promises at least 15% gross profit growth at a 32% adjusted operating margin, and the engine is a Cash App lending book deliberately shifted into longer, higher-fee, higher-loss loans. The CFO kept every AI product out of the numbers, which makes the promise a credit bet.

Block CFO Amrita Ahuja in a fireside chat at the 2026 Morgan Stanley TMT Conference. She laid out the company's first detailed 2027 guidance on the November 3, 2026 earnings call.

Block−1.00% — Block, down 1.00 percent as of its last quote just told investors what 2027 looks like, and the margin it promised does not come from the artificial intelligence Jack Dorsey is selling 1. On November 3, 2026, it guided to at least 15% gross profit growth at a 32% adjusted operating income margin 1. CFO Amrita Ahuja said the guide "does not rely on" the AI initiatives getting their own launch event on November 10 1. What carries it is a consumer lending book deliberately rebuilt to lose more and earn more.

The engine under the margin is a repriced loan

Cash App Borrow, the small-dollar advance inside Block's consumer app, moved this year from a four-week loan with a 5% fee to six weeks at 7.5% 1. Juan Hernandez, Block's head of credit, called the resulting rise in loss rates an "intentional mix shift into higher margin, higher loss products," and raised Borrow's target variable-profit margin from 2% to 2.8% 1.

The book now targets a 37% return on capital, which he calls the best of any fintech lender 1. Originations grew 40% to $19 billion, while losses on transactions, loans and receivables rose about two-thirds 13. Management's ask is that investors judge those returns rather than the loss rate 2.

The cost already shows at the customer level: originations per customer fell 7% during the rollout, as expected, because credit limits were held flat while duration stretched 1. Customers, Hernandez says, asked for the extra time and stay longer in the product 1.

The fine the market waved through

The same week's quarterly filing disclosed an agreement in principle to pay the Justice Department $764 million over anti-money-laundering controls on this same Cash App base 4. The Bank Secrecy Act charge would be deferred for three years and dismissed with compliance; the deal is not final 45. Nobody raised it on the call 4.

Analysts probed the durability of the 2027 targets instead 6, and shares closed up more than 15% the next day 3. The quarter behind the rally grew gross profit 22%, with adjusted operating income nearly doubling at a record 29% margin 1. We covered the settlement and the loss jump when the filing landed 1.

The AI revenue is real, and it is not in the numbers

Dorsey promised Block's first AI revenue this quarter, externalizing its internal tools through Builderlab and Buzz, with pricing deliberately unsettled: "we want to learn on what works" 1. He says Block has "meaningfully crossed the chasm" into streaming intelligence 7, and is using Buzz to cut its own dependence on vendors like Slack, Discord and GitHub 8. The AI paying for 2027 so far is the internal kind: non-GAAP overhead fell 21% after this year's restructuring 2.

What would break the guide

The 2027 margin is not a bet on intelligence; it is a bet on underwriting 4. It holds if the six-week loans season the way Block's models say they will, on the same customer base regulators just fined it for policing badly 4, and if borrowing frequency recovers once the transition passes.

The monthly mature-cohort returns Block just started publishing are the number to watch 1. If they hold, the guide is conservative. If they slip while per-customer originations stay down, the margin was bought from the borrowers. The AI revenue arriving this quarter is upside the guide never asked anyone to believe in.
