Bloom Energy sold a record $1.24 billion of fuel cells and still used cash doing it
Bloom Energy beat every estimate and raised guidance a third time, yet the stock fell 8.7 percent on the one line the release could not flatter: operations used cash in the biggest quarter the company has ever booked.

Bloom Energy−12.60% — Bloom Energy, down 12.60 percent today sold a record $1.24 billion of fuel cells in the third quarter, beat every estimate on the board, and raised its 2026 forecast for the third time 14. The stock still fell 8.7 percent on Thursday, October 22, and the reason sits one page below the revenue: the cash flow statement runs backwards.14
Revenue has nearly quadrupled in two years, and Q3 2026 is the record

Growth you have not been paid for yet
Operations used $27.1 million of cash in the quarter, against $226.4 million produced in the second quarter and the first outflow since mid-2025.23 Add record equipment spending of $153.5 million, three times the spring, and free cash flow swung to minus $180.6 million from plus $174.8 million.2
The largest single drain is a line accountants call contract assets: sales Bloom has booked on contracts whose billing milestones have not been reached. The balance rose $430.3 million in one quarter, to $858.6 million, about 3.6 times its level at the end of 2025.2 Receivables, inventory and other long-term assets absorbed another $523.7 million between them.2 Revenue is being recognized well ahead of collection.
The counterargument is real money
Customers also paid or were billed $754.4 million ahead of delivery, 5.2 times the December level, and the entire quarter's rise came in the long-term portion, for work more than a year out: the part due within a year fell $48.2 million to $279 million while the part beyond a year rose $357.5 million to $475 million.2 Retail traders read it that way; sentiment on Stocktwits jumped from neutral to extremely bullish as message volume surged 486 percent while the stock slid.5
KR Sridhar, Bloom's chief executive, told investors backlog is "expanding faster than revenue," yet Bloom has published no total backlog figure since February.52

Two balances decide it
The December quarter settles the argument. If operating cash flow returns to positive and contract assets fall from $858.6 million, the outflow was timing; if both worsen again, revenue quality is the story.3
Guidance was raised on revenue and profit and included no cash forecast.3 Demand is not in question: Oracle has contracted 1.2 gigawatts of Bloom fuel cells, and Project Jupiter, its New Mexico campus, plans roughly 7,000 of them, pending an air permit hearing set for December 7 in Sunland Park.27 One caution from the corrected second-quarter filing: a single customer, possibly a project-financing affiliate rather than an end user, was about 73 percent of revenue.2 Watch the cash statement, not the press release.
