Cohu's $1 billion AI pipeline has only $230 million qualified, and seven programs decide its 2027 guide
Cohu printed its best AI quarter yet on October 28 and the market sold it anyway: only about $230 million of the $1 billion compute pipeline has cleared qualification, and the 2027 guide leans on the rest converting on a nine-month clock.

The best quarter of the AI build-out, and the tape took it back
Cohu−4.31% — Cohu, down 4.31 percent today, whose Eclipse thermal handler grips a hot chip inside the test cell where AI processors get sorted, printed its best quarter of the AI build-out on October 28: net sales of $173.0 million, up 37% year over year, GAAP profit of $12.1 million ($0.22 a share), non-GAAP profit of $23.3 million ($0.43), and total bookings up 126% with systems bookings up 318% 1.
The market refused the story anyway. Shares rose about 8% intraday to $57.69 on 391,577 shares, 65% below normal volume, and the month still closed down 19.05% despite a 15.43% weekly gain 2. On October 30, the last trading day of the month, the Nasdaq fell 2.86% and Intel dropped 28.58% as tech earnings intensified the AI sell-off 3.
The Inference has tracked Cohu's insider selling on the way down, in pieces dated September 29 and October 20; what is new since is the quarter itself, and a raised guide that could not hold the price.

Only about a quarter of the $1 billion funnel has cleared qualification
The headline number was Cohu's annual high-performance computing (HPC) opportunity pipeline, grown 18% in a quarter to about $1.0 billion 1. Only about $230 million of it has cleared customer qualification, another $440 million sits in active qualification, and the rest is early engagement across 13 ranked customer programs 4.
Qualification has run nine to twelve months from first engagement, plus six to eight weeks once a next-generation thermal head is installed 4. The seven programs carrying roughly $340 million of potential annual systems revenue do not reach their major milestones until late November 2026 through Q1 2027 4.
Now set the guide against that calendar. Nine-month sales of $447.1 million plus the $178 million fourth-quarter guide put fiscal 2026 near $625 million, so 30% to 40% growth in 2027 needs roughly $190 million to $250 million of new revenue 14. The CFO put 2027 HPC revenue at least at the high end of a $200 million to $250 million range 4. Cohu is, in effect, booking 2028's funnel to underwrite 2027's guide, and management itself ties the top of the range to qualification timing 4.

The ramp costs margin and cash
Growth is not landing at full price. Q4 gross margin is guided to about 44% against 45.7% in Q3, operating expenses step up to about $57 million, and Q3 operating cash flow ran about $6 million against $12.1 million of GAAP profit 14.

The bulls have a real case
Recurring revenue was 48% of sales, Cohu's Diamondx semiconductor test platform is displacing an incumbent supplier in server power-management test, and backlog for Neon, Cohu's inspection system for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced packaging, is booked into Q1 2027 4. Stifel−2.44% — Stifel, down 2.44 percent today lifted its price target to $75 and Needham held Buy at $65 2. Concentration cuts the other way: one compute customer passed 10% of quarterly sales 4.
What decides it is the qualification calendar
What moves 2027 revenue is which of the seven programs clears qualification between late November and the end of Q1, not the size of the funnel, which is management's estimate of future demand and pays only as programs convert 4. Three dated markers tell the story: the first conversions from late November 2026, Neon demonstration systems shipping to a large US integrated device manufacturer in Q1 2027, and the November 10 Investor Day where Cohu presents a new midterm financial model 4.
