Astera Labs showed a 50-meter optical link and dated its optics for early 2027, before November 3 earnings

Astera Labs demonstrated a live PCIe 6 link across 50 metres of fibre and dated its own optics for early 2027. The November 3 earnings report tests a switch business priced at 26 times this year's sales, so the Q4 guide decides whether that multiple stands.

Astera Labs CEO and co-founder Jitendra Mohan at the company's rack-scale AI connectivity showcase. The November 3 earnings report tests whether that rack-scale story, now extended with optics, can carry a 26-times-sales valuation.

Astera Labs−10.58% — Astera Labs, down 10.58 percent today, a maker of connectivity chips that move data between processors inside AI data centers, updated its optical playbook on October 28 1. The update shows a live PCIe 6 link carrying data 50 metres over optical fibre, driven by a silicon-photonics module placed next to its Scorpio-X 320L fabric switch, with a bit error rate, measured before the error-correction code that cleans up transmission, below one error in ten billion 1. A second link ran 20 metres on a VCSEL, a low-cost vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, and a switch tray carried 576 lanes in total 1.

The same document dates the product: near-package optics, modules that sit beside the switch chip rather than inside it, available from early 2027, with co-packaged optics, where the fibre connects straight to the chip, at later development stages 1. A capability shown this month, revenue booked next year: that gap is what the November 3 earnings report has to bridge 1.

Quarterly revenue has risen every quarter for two years, and is six times its Q1 2024 level

The demo answers a reach limit copper cannot

The constraint is stated by Astera and its partners, not inferred: as rack-scale AI systems grow, the reach, cable density, signal integrity, power and heat of conventional electrical interconnects limit the architecture 6. Astera's own portfolio now spans centimetres of circuit board to more than 50 metres of fibre 5.

Fifty metres lets accelerators, memory pools and switches sit in different racks. What gets rebuilt on top is already visible: the Aries 7 portfolio, announced on October 8, adds optical drivers and amplifiers alongside its copper retimers, sampling to select customers in the current quarter 5, and a rack-level demonstration with Lumentum−8.16% — Lumentum, down 8.16 percent today and Corning was announced for the OCP Global Summit on October 12-15, using the same laser approach as the 20-metre link, not the 50-metre one 6. Astera is building the switch silicon and the optical front end as one system. That is the right architecture; it is not yet a revenue line.

The print is about switches, not optics

When Astera reports after the close on November 3, the quarter itself is largely priced 23. Zacks Equity Research, the firm whose consensus the market trades against, expects $550.39 million in revenue and $1.19 a share, mid-range inside management's own guidance of $540-560 million and $1.16-1.21 28.

Management has already told investors what to check: CEO Jitendra Mohan said in August that Scorpio, the smart fabric-switch family that routes traffic between AI accelerators, would become the company's largest product family in the third quarter, one quarter ahead of prior expectations, on the X-Series 320-lane switch's production ramp 86. So the Q4 guide, not the Q3 number, decides the stock 23.

The multiple makes the guide load-bearing

The market cap reached $49.7 billion on October 27, about 26 times the $1.89 billion of full-year revenue analysts expect 12. The optical products behind part of that multiple have a date but no reported design wins 1. Options imply an 11% move on the print 3.

Last Friday the whole connectivity complex sold together, nothing Astera said: Intel−29.36% — Intel, down 29.36 percent today had reported a much weaker fourth-quarter forecast citing a severe PC slump, and the Nasdaq sank nearly 3%, taking the semiconductors with it 9. The stock fell 10.93% alongside Coherent−10.40% — Coherent, down 10.40 percent today down 11.34%, Applied Optoelectronics down 12.80% and Lumentum down 8.57% 4. A session that moved every name together points to one conclusion about the market: it holds the entire optical chain to the same 2027 promise 4.

What to watch in the Q4 guide

The insider selling we reported in October remains the backdrop; what is new is the roadmap and this test. The watch item on Tuesday evening is specific: read the Q4 guide for the word optics.

A guide that extends the Scorpio ramp but pulls no optical revenue forward leaves the 26-times-sales multiple standing on switch silicon alone. A guide that names 2027 optical design wins turns the demo into a business, and the stock's reaction to the print will show which of the two investors got.

Omni MedSci sued STMicroelectronics and Sony over nine depth-sensing patents as four banks cut targets

On October 30, Omni MedSci sued STMicroelectronics and Sony over nine patents on near-infrared time-of-flight sensing, the same day four banks cut their targets on a quarter that beat. The claim lands on the layer ST pitches as its physical-AI future, and no damages figure exists to price it.

TTM posted a record quarter, admitted its AI data-center line ran 10% below its own target, and watched the stock lose 63% from its high. Then the company spent $100 million buying itself at $86.31 and two insiders added $1.34 million at $88 to $90.

KLA beat and guided higher, then told investors on the same call that optical parts pace its shipments and memory prices defer its margin recovery. Coherent reports November 4 and Lumentum November 5, and those two prints decide whether the constraint story holds.
