Coursera's enterprise base is shrinking at 91% retention as its first Udemy quarter lands Thursday

Project Helix, previewed in September and showcased in Bengaluru this month, sells verified workforce capability instead of access to courses. Coursera's first full quarter with Udemy reports after the close on Thursday, onto a market that has already marked the stock down.

Coursera on stage at its Coursera Connect customer event. The company reports its first full quarter with Udemy on Thursday, with Project Helix, its AI-native platform, due to reach enterprises broadly in the first half of 2027.

Coursera's−0.21% — Coursera, down 0.21 percent today third-quarter report lands after the close on Thursday, its first with a full quarter of Udemy, the learning marketplace it absorbed on May 11, folded in 2. The headline consensus, about $370 million of revenue 1, is the least informative number on the page: the growth is the merger, not the business, which declined 1% on a normalized basis last quarter 2. What Thursday actually prices is whether the base of more than 12,000 enterprise customers holds together while the product meant to keep it, Project Helix, finishes being built 3.

Free AI answers are eating the catalog

Chief executive Greg Hart names the mechanism himself: AI has turned basic information into a commodity, and consuming content alone does not build skills, because "an answer is not an outcome" 2. Co-founder Andrew Ng, now building the AI-native learning startup LearnVector, sharpens it: a bare chatbot helps a learner finish the task while leaving them less capable, because the thinking is offloaded 2.

Follow both hops and the course catalog stops being something an employer rents by the seat. What stays scarce is evidence, from a source an employer trusts, that a person can actually do the work.

Helix turns that proof into the product

Helix, previewed on September 9 and showcased at Coursera's FWD customer event in Bengaluru this month, is built around that scarcity 34. A manager states a business goal in plain language; the platform assembles an adaptive path from more than 30,000 instructors and content partners; practice and assessment land inside everyday workflows, through connectors that already place Coursera content within AI assistants like Claude and Microsoft−0.85% — Microsoft, down 0.85 percent today 365 Copilot 23.

The output is a portable skills record that follows the employee from job to job 3. In Bengaluru, IIM Bangalore's digital learning arm agreed to bring management programs onto the platform, and Flipkart's learning team is among the customers shaping the design 34. Demand is not the constraint: generative-AI enrollments run at more than 45 a minute across the two platforms this year, and we tracked that surge building in India earlier this month 2.

Thursday prices the wait until launch

Helix does not reach enterprises broadly until the first half of 2027, so it books nothing this week 3. Until then the tell is renewal: enterprise net revenue retention, the rate at which existing customers' spending comes back, ran at 91% last quarter, which means the base is shrinking in place while the merger inflates reported growth 2.

Consensus sits inside management's own guidance of $364 to $372 million 12, so the live questions are retention, and how Helix gets priced against rivals like LinkedIn Learning and Pluralsight 8. The market has already discounted the wait: the stock closed Tuesday at $4.74, down from $5.78 in early September 16.

The bet itself is the right read of what AI does to learning. The content became free overnight; the capability to use it did not, and the builder who turns that gap into verified proof has earned the right to be paid for it. Coursera carries roughly a billion dollars of cash and no debt, which buys time 2. Thursday will show how much customer base is left to collect it from.
