Eaton's backlog grew 46% in a year and the company won't say how much is AI
Eaton printed a record quarter and jumped 7% on US election day, but the move was for the queue: electrical backlog grew 46% in a year against 19% organic sales growth. Eaton will not say how much of that book is data centers, and Vertiv no longer reports orders at all.

Eaton+6.95% — Eaton, up 6.95 percent today (NYSE: ETN), the power-management equipment maker, reported record third-quarter sales of $8.947 billion, up 28%, adjusted earnings of $3.68 a share against a $3.54 consensus, and record segment margins of 25.3% 1. Its shares jumped 6.99% to $391.67 by mid-morning on midterm election day 2. What moved them sat below the income statement: electrical backlog ended September 46% larger than a year earlier 1, printed the morning after Bernstein, the Wall Street research firm, called US data-center political fears overstated 34.
Orders are outrunning shipments
Twelve-month rolling organic orders rose 39% in Electrical Americas and 51% in Electrical Global, against 19% organic sales growth, for an electrical book-to-bill of 1.2 1. Electrical Global's backlog alone rose 121% 1. A gap that wide is pricing power: Electrical Americas margins hit 29.8%, up 230 basis points sequentially 1. Revenue growth has climbed from 7.3% in the first quarter of 2025 to 28% now 91.
Rolling order growth ran more than double the quarter's organic sales growth

The book carries no data-center label
Eaton does not say how much of the book is data centers 4. Bernstein counts 244 gigawatts of the 433-gigawatt US pipeline, 56%, as politically exposed 3; governors in Pennsylvania and Texas have already moved against data-center growth 8. Management put Eaton's US data-center backlog at 307 gigawatts last quarter 78. If a project in that pipeline is voted down, the loss lands first on the developer holding reserved switchgear for a building that never energizes, then on Eaton's conversion rate.
The queue was bought with debt
Boyd Thermal, a data-center liquid-cooling maker, closed on March 12 for $9.55 billion; Ultra PCS, an aerospace controls maker, in January for $1.53 billion 1. Borrowings roughly doubled and net interest expense nearly tripled, to $198 million from $67 million 16. GAAP earnings rose just 7%, to $2.77 a share, with full-year GAAP guidance flat against 2025 16. Another €810 million goes to COL Group, an Italian medium-voltage switchgear maker, signed September 25 and closing in early 2027 17. The market pays 39.85 times trailing earnings for the whole book 2.
The test is conversion, not demand
Bernstein's case: data centers bring jobs and tax revenue, so officials bend rather than block; where politics bite, developers pay more for power and grid upgrades, and a developer who pays more for its hookup still buys the gear 34. It kept Outperform ratings on Eaton ($534 target), Vertiv+3.95% — Vertiv, up 3.95 percent today ($376), the data-center cooling maker, and Quanta Services+5.05% — Quanta Services, up 5.05 percent today ($804), the grid contractor 3. It expects these stocks to fall first if restrictionist candidates do well tonight 34. Barron's, the same morning: rock-solid earnings will not ease AI concerns 5.
Eaton's own forecast has fourth-quarter organic growth slowing to 13–15%, on free cash flow of $1.03 billion, 11.6% of sales 12. Vertiv no longer reports orders, which leaves Eaton's backlog the AI power build's largest public count 4. A backlog is a promise with a delivery date, and most of Eaton's are dated 2028 and beyond 7. The next readings are tonight's results, then whether the fourth quarter lands inside the guide.
