LG Electronics' AI cooling orders passed $2.1 billion; index funds must sell 113.8 billion won in December

Korea Exchange's new KRICS classification pushes an estimated 318.2 billion won of December ETF selling into destination baskets that hold a fraction of the IT sector's 2.3721 trillion won, a gap of roughly 360 to 1. The list is final in November; the trade takes effect December 11.

An LG Electronics industrial chiller of the kind used in data center cooling

An LG Electronics chiller of the kind used in data center cooling: the order book for the business passed 3 trillion won ($2.1 billion) in October 2026.

Two numbers landed on October 28 1. Korea Exchange released its new KRICS industry classification, which reclassifies 54 companies out of the information technology sector and puts LG Electronics+2.67% — LG Electronics, up 2.67 percent today into consumer goods, feeding the December rebalancing of the KOSPI 200 1. The same day, LG reported that cumulative orders for its AI data center cooling business had passed 3 trillion won ($2.1 billion), a more than fivefold jump from about 600 billion won at mid-year 2.

The first number measures index membership. The second measures a customer order book. In December, the first one sets the trade.

The sellers have no counterparty

Mirae Asset Securities estimates 204.4 billion won of rebalancing selling in Samsung SDI and 113.8 billion won in LG Electronics as both leave the KOSPI 200 IT sector index, 318.2 billion won combined 1. Buying on the other side is estimated at 125.2 billion won in SK and 31.6 billion won in Daeduck Electronics, the stocks entering it 1.

The imbalance is structural. ETFs tracking the IT sector index held 2.3721 trillion won of net assets as of October 26, roughly 360 times the 6.6 billion won in the industrials sector ETF waiting to absorb Samsung SDI 1. For LG Electronics the sources give no figure for the consumer goods basket, and since its own IT ETF money is what must be sold, the destination side is presumably thinner than the 2.3721 trillion won it leaves; the reporting quantifies no committed buyer on LG's destination side at all 1.

Estimated December ETF selling is about double the buying on the other side

The quarter the flow ignores

LG's third-quarter filing, out the same day, shows revenue of 23.8241 trillion won, up 8.9%, and operating profit of 781.9 billion won, up 13.5% but 19.9% short of the 975.8 billion won consensus on currency weakness at subsidiary LG Innotek, as The Inference reported when the miss first surfaced 3.

Nine-month operating profit reached 4.0347 trillion won, up 55.9%, past 4 trillion won for the first time 34. The cooling order book quintupled, LG is adding 220 billion won of capacity including a US production base 24, and its chillers were the only Korean entry in Nvidia's−0.30% — Nvidia, down 0.30 percent today DSX Ready certification for AI factory products 2. Index funds sell when membership changes, whatever the earnings.

The calendar is fixed

The final constituent list is confirmed in November, trading is expected to cluster around the December 10 futures and options expiry, and the revised indexes take effect December 11 1. Korea Exchange is still gathering market feedback until Friday and says some classifications could still change, with final figures due after the 30th 6. Anyone holding through that window inherits the flow. Anyone buying takes the other side of a mechanical trade.

What the other side says

Samsung Securities researcher Im Gyun calls the change in sector weights "not significant" 5, and Mirae Asset estimates 140 trillion to 160 trillion won tracks the KOSPI 200 once index funds and pension funds are counted, against 88.1 trillion won in ETFs across the 63 indexes the overhaul touches 56. That dwarfs 318 billion won of sector ETF churn 556.

Rebalance flows are also temporary by design: ETFs trade to match the index, so the forced selling stops when the window closes. That argues the hit is timing, not a verdict on the business. But timing is the only thing a seller cannot choose. Samsung SDI's buyer is a 6.6 billion won fund. For LG Electronics, the count of quantified buyers is zero.

What to watch

The November confirmation list, and whether LG's cooling order book converts to revenue faster than the December window opens. The selling is scheduled. The orders' value has no published estimate at all.
