One family's $6 billion check props up Robinhood's record deposit month
Robinhood booked a record $1.42 billion quarter on October 27, but October's deposit surge leans on one family's $6 billion check into the federal children's account program while crypto revenue halved and Q3 deposits slowed.

The number that changes the story came from the CFO, not the income statement. October net deposits have already topped $13 billion month to date, including $6 billion from the Dell family's contribution to Trump Accounts, the federal program seeding investment accounts for American children 1. In a record deposit month, one family's check is nearly half.
The organic engines shrank while the state switched on a pipeline
The engines that once filled the deposit base are cooling. Q3 net deposits were $15.7 billion, down from $21.7 billion in the second quarter 3. Crypto revenue fell 55% to $120 million on volume down 38% to $50 billion, and the cash sweep that earns Robinhood a spread on idle cash fell 9% to $32.3 billion 1. The one crypto line growing is new plumbing: Robinhood Chain took in $26 million of revenue in its first quarter live on mainnet 4.
Net deposits are slowing, and October leans on one family's check

Into that slowdown, Treasury switched on automatic enrollment on October 1, opening accounts for 60 million children no adult had claimed, for a total near 70 million, every American child under 18 with a Social Security number 16. Robinhood has counted Trump Account money in its net deposits metric since July 1. And the money cannot trade: it sits in an S&P 500 index sleeve, the State Street+1.84% — State Street, up 1.84 percent today SPYM ETF, until the child turns 18 67.
Who pays, who benefits, who waits eight years or more
The payers are the Treasury and the Dells. Michael and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion, $250 for each of 25 million children born 2016 through 2024 in ZIP codes with median family income near $118,000 6. Treasury seeds newborns born 2025 through 2028 with $1,000 6. As of October 7, $4.5 billion had been deposited across nearly 70 million accounts; divided out, that is about $64 per account 5.
The beneficiary is Robinhood, the program's initial trustee and brokerage alongside financial agent BNY 5. Trump Account service revenues helped drive other revenue up 61% to $142 million, while the company expects to spend about $100 million servicing the program this year, and CFO Shiv Verma signaled it is "doing even more" 17. A September Inference ledger mapped how Robinhood takes four cuts of one retail trade; the deposit side now shows who fills the account.
The bull case: 70 million accounts that never churn
The program's defenders hold real cards. Bernstein projects prediction markets revenue of $1.7 billion for Robinhood by 2028, ahead of crypto 3. Treasury estimates about 2 million new accounts a year will be created under auto-enrollment 6. A custody annuity that compounds for a decade and never churns is a deposit franchise marketing budgets do not produce.

But the balances are thin, the flow is political, and Robinhood is paying for the privilege: operating expenses rose 16% year over year to $739 million, partly on Trump Account and Rothera costs 1. The bull case on deposits now leans on a federal program's durability, which no earnings model can price.
Three prints decide whether the deposit pipeline holds
Three reads decide it: whether Treasury's next deposit print shows the Dell pledge fully deployed against $2.6 billion of philanthropic gifts booked as of October 7 5; whether the 2027 Trump Account budget, due in January or February, grows 7; and whether event contracts keep the sixfold pace in Q4 1. The $250 grants sit with children born 2016 through 2024, at least eight years from touching the money 6. Investors priced the news down 7.6% pre-market Wednesday to $87.34 7.
