Panasonic's Taiwan laminate plant burned, one of five MEGTRON sources, after a ¥710 billion AI forecast raise
Five days after a record quarter and a ¥92 billion AI-materials expansion, fire gutted the Taiwan plant that is one of only five global sources of Panasonic's MEGTRON laminate. Two workers are missing, the damage is unmeasured, and the stock had already banked the good news.

Two men were still in the building at dawn
At 2 a.m. on November 4 fire broke out at Panasonic's five-story factory on Guangfu Road in Hukou Township, Hsinchu County 1. Five men, three Taiwanese and two Vietnamese, got out hurt and reached hospital conscious; two Taiwanese employees did not, and rescuers were still searching for them as the morning went on 1. Flames were put out shortly before noon, and Panasonic confirmed an explosion had occurred at the facility 2. The cause and the extent of the damage remain under investigation. 12
The plant belongs to Panasonic Industrial Devices Materials Taiwan, which supplies the island's printed circuit board makers feeding computers and AI servers 2. It is one of only five bases worldwide making Panasonic's MEGTRON multilayer laminate, alongside Koriyama in Japan, Suzhou and Guangzhou in China and Ayutthaya in Thailand 4.
The raise that counted on this division
Five days earlier, on October 30, Panasonic Holdings reported a record September quarter, sales up 8% to ¥2,073.6 billion with operating profit of ¥180.7 billion, and raised fiscal 2027 operating-profit guidance by ¥120 billion to ¥710 billion, crediting stronger-than-expected AI infrastructure demand 3. The fiscal 2029 AI-infrastructure sales target went to ¥1.6 trillion from ¥1.38 trillion 3.
The same day, group unit Panasonic Industry unveiled a ¥92 billion expansion of exactly these materials: ¥67 billion for MEGTRON low-loss laminates, with new buildings in Suzhou, China (August 2028) and Ayutthaya, Thailand (April 2029); ¥17 billion for SP-Cap capacitors that steady power to GPUs; ¥8 billion for a packaging-materials research building in Mie Prefecture 4. None of the new buildings sits in Taiwan 4.

One fewer source of a sold-out product
Economic Daily News puts the burned plant under 20% of group laminate capacity, but the high-end M6 to M8 laminate used in AI servers was already sold out, so any lost output tightens supply further, and overflow orders are expected to head to Taiwanese rivals EMC, TUC, ITEQ and Nan Ya 5.
What the tape says, and what it cannot
The 6.39% fall in Panasonic shares on November 4 came on a day AI data-center names sold off broadly after the Democratic midterm sweep 72, so it is not cleanly the fire's price. Before this week the stock had already more than doubled off its 52-week low, trading near 16 times guided earnings with analyst targets above the price 6.
What decides it
The damage assessment does. If Koriyama, Guangzhou and Suzhou absorb the volume, the ¥710 billion forecast stands and the outage is a rounding error, though the record names no other base producing the IC-substrate materials Hukou specializes in, so that substitution is an assumption 45.
If Hukou's IC-substrate output is out for months, the sold-out overflow goes to Panasonic's rivals, and the replacement buildings are not online until 2028 and 2029 4. Two things settle it: Panasonic's own statement on the damage and restart timeline, and the fiscal third-quarter report due in February 2027 6.
