Spotify's $5 AI remix tier is behind schedule as Sony and Warner stay unsigned, the FT reports
The Financial Times says the AI remix add-on, $4 to $5 a month from early 2027, is behind schedule because artists will not opt in, and producer Jermaine Dupri is telling musicians to set the fee themselves. Investors are paying 37.5 times forward earnings for a product with no first dollar until 2027.

Spotify+0.77% — Spotify, up 0.77 percent today wants a second monthly fee for music its subscribers already rent. From the first quarter of 2027, a $4 to $5 add-on to Premium would let fans use generative AI to remix songs or generate covers in another artist's style, with an announcement possibly timed to the February Grammys 12. Some outlets priced the optional add-on as making Premium up to 39 percent more expensive 3.
The complication: the launch is slipping, and the reason is consent. The Financial Times reports progress is slower than planned because major contemporary artists are resisting, even as some established acts agree; Olivia Rodrigo said in October she would never use AI in her music 2. Sony+0.95% — Sony, up 0.95 percent today Music and Warner Music remain unsigned; Universal, Merlin, Kobalt and Believe have signed, and even a label deal leaves each artist a second opt-in 14.
Jermaine Dupri tells artists to name their own price
On October 31, producer Jermaine Dupri called on musicians to set their own fee and choose which records are used, pointing to Spotify's $21.85 billion in scheduled revenue this year: "THEY GOTTA CUT US IN" 5.
The cost of consent is already in the numbers
Third-quarter operating expenses rose 26% to €967 million, partly on AI computing, and free cash flow fell 9% to €735 million, even as gross margin hit a record 33.0% and operating income reached €672 million 67. Bernstein analyst Ian Moore estimates only 7% to 8% of paying US subscribers would take the tier by end-2028 2, so none of it lands in the February 2 report, which demands 316 million subscribers, €5.2 billion of revenue and €820 million of operating income 6.
