Thailand's record export month was sold before it shipped

Sold out in January, shipped in August

Anyone buying storage or servers outside Western Digital's top seven cloud customers stands behind them in line, and August's customs data shows what that means. Thai exports rose 24.3% year on year to $34.62 billion, the fastest growth in 56 months↗ ¹²³. Thailand hosts the final-assembly operations behind roughly 80% of the world's hard-drive supply, including WD's Bang Pa-in and Prachinburi plants ¹, and chief executive Irving Tan said in late January the company was "pretty much sold out for calendar '26" ¹⁴. It was a delivery, not a surprise.

Seven buyers, one queue

Firm purchase orders from those seven customers cover WD's hard-drive production for this year, and its multiyear agreements with three top-five customers run into 2028 and 2029↗ ⁴. Cloud supplied 89% of revenue in its fiscal third quarter ⁴. Seagate's build-to-order contracts fix configurations and pricing for all of calendar 2027, with most nearline exabytes allocated into 2028 ⁴⁵. The scarcity shows in the margins: adjusted gross margin of 52.7% last quarter, up from 37.9%, on fiscal 2026 revenue up 34% ⁴. The allocation economy has landlords, and everyone else farms.

The bill lands outside the club

HP sits outside the queue, and it is paying. It declined to issue fiscal-year guidance↗ this month and projects industry PC volumes to fall again in calendar 2027 ⁶. Its chief financial officer expects memory to reach 35% of a PC's bill of materials↗ this year, from 15 to 18% ⁷.

One country, two speeds

August split the customs ledger in two.

Car production fell 0.9% to 1.455 million units in 2025, and April was the weakest month in five years↗ ⁸. The divergence has a mechanism: Honda has shut its Ayutthaya assembly line, Chinese EV makers build in the Eastern Economic Corridor east of Bangkok, and the two trades draw on different workforces in different industrial zones, so the electronics boom does not reabsorb car workers ¹.

The corridor has street addresses

The boom's other half sits in the same province as Honda's closed line. Victory Giant, the top PCB supplier for Nvidia AI servers by Nikkei Asia's count, has opened its second factory in Ayutthaya, and Gold Circuit, which builds Nvidia switch trays, runs its first Thai plant at full capacity ¹. PCB investment applications have topped 200 billion baht, about $6 billion, since 2022 ¹, inside $43.6 billion of total applications in the first half of 2026↗ ⁹.

The door an exemption holds open

US-bound shipments rose 48.7% in August, the 35th straight monthly gain ²³, even after a 12.5% forced-labor levy↗ took effect on most Thai goods on 24 July 2026 ³¹⁰. Integrated circuits and hard drives, the goods driving the record, are among more than 2,120 exempted products ¹; about 60% of Thai shipments to the US escape the tariff, by the trade office's count ³. A separate overcapacity investigation covering Thailand and 15 other economies has named no rates ¹.

The rates that decide the exemption

The trade office now points to full-year export growth near 15% ²³ and warns that front-loaded orders could make 2027 contract ³. The probe's rates will decide whether the exemption survives; the drive makers' next earnings calls will show whether the queue extends past 2028 ¹⁴.
