David Holz is the founder and chief executive of Midjourney, which in 2026 has pushed into body scanning and an astrology acquisition.
Holz worked as a consultant to NASA before co-founding Leap Motion with Michael Buckwald, a childhood friend, according to Forbes. Leap Motion made 3-D motion-controlled devices meant to change how people interact with computers, and Holz served as its co-founder and chief technology officer, according to Crunchbase. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was named to Forbes 30 Under 30.
Holz went on to found Midjourney, which he runs as chief executive from San Francisco. In July 2026 he announced an astrology acquisition, and Midjourney has been planning a spa that will scan visitors' bodies, though diagnosis is not part of the offer.
The scanning push has drawn scrutiny. Butterfly took a $74 million Midjourney license resting on a scanner with no FDA clearance. By Holz's own account, the prototype takes about 20 minutes per scan, has scanned roughly a dozen people and carries no AI in its imaging pipeline yet, The Inference reported in October 2026.
