Cadence Design Systems lifts 2026 growth outlook to 21% and plans to bill for its new AI agents

Cadence raised its 2026 growth outlook to 21% after a 22% revenue quarter and a record $8.2 billion backlog, and management tied the raise to agentic AI. Tuesday's session has to price the harder question: do AI agents expand chip design, or shrink the seat count the business is built on?

Chip-design software maker Cadence+3.95% — Cadence, up 3.95 percent today raised its 2026 revenue growth outlook to 21% on Monday, with Chief Executive Anirudh Devgan citing "the transformational Agentic AI opportunity" as the reason 1. Third-quarter revenue was $1.633 billion, up 22% from $1.339 billion a year earlier, and non-GAAP earnings of $2.11 a share beat the $2.04 consensus 12.

Backlog hit a record $8.2 billion, $4.2 billion of it recognizable as revenue within 12 months 1. The company now guides to revenue of $6.387 billion to $6.417 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $8.37 to $8.43, up from the $8.05 to $8.15 range set in July, when the growth outlook was 19% 134.

Quarterly revenue is up nearly 60% in three years, to $1.63B

The payers are named, and so is the meter

Hours earlier, Cadence had launched Maestro, domain-specialized AI models that drive its own chip-design tools, claiming up to 30% higher quality and 5x token efficiency against general-purpose foundation models; NVIDIA's+2.67% — NVIDIA, up 2.67 percent today Nemotron models are in the mix, and early access opens this quarter 6.

Across more than 100 active customer engagements, the buyers file the claims: MediaTek lifted verification coverage 50% to 70% while cutting engineering effort 1.4x to 2x, Renesas−3.57% — Renesas, down 3.57 percent today reported a 34x productivity gain, and Nokia+7.00% — Nokia, up 7.00 percent today logged a 5x acceleration on the Millennium platform 17. Socionext, whose fivefold expectation The Inference reported on October 21, put chief operating officer Hisato Yoshida's name behind the number Monday 6.

Chief Financial Officer John Wall said Cadence aims to monetize the design agents and the orchestration around them, while customers bear their own model-compute costs 7. An agent that does the work of five engineers is a pricing problem dressed as a productivity story.

The pivot is not free on GAAP

What the retooling costs shows up on GAAP. Operating margin fell to 26.2% from 31.8%, and GAAP EPS was flat at $1.05, short of the $1.13 consensus, while non-GAAP EPS rose 9% 13. Amortization of acquired intangibles doubled to 4.9% of revenue from 1.9%, and $2.14 billion of nine-month acquisition spending drew cash down to $1.45 billion from $3.0 billion 1. The board's answer was another $2.5 billion of buyback authorization 1.

What Tuesday's session has to price

The productivity numbers are vendor- and customer-reported, not audited, and analyst Karl Freund, who discloses Cadence as a client, says the efficiency figures still need validation in complex production settings 8. Sell-side models assume 12.9% revenue growth over the next 12 months, against the new 21% guide 9.

Synopsys+6.75% — Synopsys, up 6.75 percent today, the other half of the design-software duopoly, raised its own 2026 outlook in August and is building GPT-Synopsys with OpenAI$500B — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $500B; that model ships with no published benchmarks and no pricing, and the third-party tests The Inference flagged last week are still missing 410.

The outlook also assumes export controls hold, and Cadence remains under its July 2025 settlement agreements with the Justice Department and the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, with China at 16% of quarterly revenue 17.

The settling number is the price of a 2027 seat

Q4 is guided to $1.695 billion to $1.725 billion, and the first Maestro models reach early-access customers this quarter 16. The number that settles the argument is the price of an engineer's seat in 2027, the first full year with agents on the meter 16.
