Claude deleted a law professor's notes and Dropbox restored them; Dropbox paid $350 million for Tigris Data

William Baude's constitutional-law files came back through Dropbox's file history the same day Dropbox agreed to pay $350 million for Tigris Data and guided 2027 revenue roughly flat without the deal.

Claude deleted the notes, then pointed to Dropbox for the undo

William Baude, the Harry Kalven Jr. Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, asked Claude, Anthropic's$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B AI assistant, to update page numbers in old constitutional-law lecture notes, then went to lunch on November 5, 2026 123. The assistant's own message, in the screenshot he posted, reads: "I deleted your Fall 2026 FINAL syllabus .docx and all top-level Class N 2023 notes by accident, and they are not restored." 12

It then asked whether he could restore the deleted files from Dropbox−3.08% — Dropbox, down 3.08 percent today 1. Everything came back: "I did recover them all, thanks to Dropbox," he wrote 2. The post drew about 2.0 million views by November 7, against his 23,025 followers 1.

The undo button sat outside the agent

An assistant asked to renumber pages had enough access to delete the originals, and the rescue ran through another company's product. Anthropic's guidance for Cowork, its agent that works in folders a user connects, says permanent deletion requires explicit permission, and it advises a dedicated working folder and backups of important files 1. The backup Anthropic recommends is, in practice, a paid storage product with version history. That is Dropbox's core business.

The same day, Dropbox bet $350 million on agent storage

The same day Baude posted, Dropbox (Nasdaq: DBX) reported third-quarter results and announced a definitive agreement, signed November 3, to buy Tigris Data, an object-storage startup founded by former Uber−0.13% — Uber, down 0.13 percent today engineers, for roughly $350 million in cash, plus DBX Agent Cloud, a storage layer for AI applications and agents 456.

Co-CEO Ashraf Alkarmi framed the pitch: "The value of AI depends on the content and context it can work with" 5. That is the bet this desk left unsized on November 6, stacked on the 9 percent workforce cut and CTO exit it covered on November 1 57.

Agent demand is arriving before the revenue does

The demand is visible already: about 1.4 million users connect Dropbox to outside AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, and more than 20 percent of teams used included AI credits last quarter 7. The new AI experience has reached more than 70,000 teams 46, and management sells Tigris's snapshots and forking on lower latency and reliability for agents 7.

Quarterly revenue, USD millions, from Dropbox's SEC filings. Q3 2026 reported November 5, 2026.8

The urgency is the top line. Quarterly revenue ended the September quarter at $637.3 million, barely above the $635.0 million of Q4 2023 8. Fiscal 2027 is guided roughly flat excluding Tigris, with about 150 basis points of operating-margin expansion planned and a $13 million revenue headwind from FormSwift, a form-automation product shut down at the end of Q3 7.

Dropbox sells the insurance and shares the risk

The objection writes itself: Dropbox is joining the risk, not only insuring it. Its own AI now organizes, moves and edits files after user approval, with an action record and undo for supported changes 56. Tigris's forking exists precisely so one agent cannot modify data other workloads depend on 9. Agents were deleting files before this week: in April, a Claude agent removed a company database in nine seconds 3. Anthropic has not commented on Baude's case, and no figure in the record prices what file history is worth 1.

February will show whether agent storage is revenue or insurance

Management is holding 2027 guidance conservative until Tigris integration and AI monetization show up in the numbers, promised for February 7. Baude's afternoon made the case for free: his notes came back because one copy sat where the agent could not touch it, and selling copies like that is what the $350 million buys 7.
