OpenAI's voice agents dial out at $0.05 a minute over Twilio's pipes; Twilio just guided growth down

Twilio, whose software links apps to the phone network, beat estimates on October 29 and raised its full-year outlook, then guided fourth-quarter organic growth down to 11–12% from 16%; the stock fell 17%. Six days later, OpenAI's voice agents went live over Twilio's own pipes at $0.05 a minute.

Twilio chief executive Khozema Shipchandler. His company's fourth-quarter guide, 11 to 12% organic growth, broke the stock on October 30.

A record quarter, then a guide the release never explained

Twilio−1.48% — Twilio, down 1.48 percent today, which sells the software links that connect apps to the phone network, reported records on October 29: revenue of $1.56 billion, up 20% reported and 16% organic, adjusted earnings of $1.65 a share against the $1.47 analysts expected, and free cash flow of $369.6 million 12. The fourth-quarter guide then broke the stock: organic growth of 11 to 12%, adjusted operating income of $300 to $310 million, below the $326 million just printed, and no reason in the release 1.

Shares fell 17.25% to $200.16 the next day, after a 70% climb in 2026 to a high of $308.40 on October 6 23. Levi & Korsinsky, a shareholder-rights law firm, has twice solicited investors into an investigation of potential securities claims, through its SueWallSt arm on November 2 and under its own name on November 6; those are client solicitations, not findings of liability 45.

The Inference reported on October 7 that index funds paid $300.91 for Twilio the week Meta+1.11% — Meta, up 1.11 percent today and Verizon−1.10% — Verizon, down 1.10 percent today raised the carrier fees it passes through at cost. New since: the guide, the drop, the lawyers, and OpenAI's$1.18T — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $1.18T launch.

The reason arrived on the call, an hour later

Chief Financial Officer Aidan Viggiano gave the reason the release omitted. Messaging, about 60% of revenue, slowed from 18% organic growth in the second quarter to 17%, as independent-software-vendor customers lapped comparisons from late 2025; voice and software add-ons held their pace 6.

The guide also assumes about $75 million of incremental U.S. carrier fees in the fourth quarter, after $53 million in the third and roughly $245 million for the year 16. Those fees sit outside organic growth by definition, which is why reported growth guides to 17 to 17.5% while organic guides to 11 to 12% 16.

Management calls the step-down prudence: the third quarter was guided near the same range and beat its high end by about four points, and organic beats have run two to four points for roughly three years 6. The preliminary 2027 outlook, at least 10% organic growth and at least $1.35 billion of free cash flow, still makes the slower rate the planning base 6.

What an AI phone call costs, and what Twilio gets of it

Six days later, on November 4, OpenAI made its GPT-Live outbound telephony API generally available: voice agents that dial real numbers, at $0.05 a minute for the intelligence, over SIP trunks, the phone-line links into the traditional network, supplied by Twilio, Telnyx and Ozonetel 7. Twilio had wired its own side in September, when its Agent Connect product began bridging its Programmable Voice phone streams directly to GPT-Live-1 8.

The bill comes in two parts: OpenAI's $0.05 a minute for the conversation, and the trunk provider's carrier charge on top 7. What Twilio keeps of that carrier leg appears in no launch document 7. No source ties the fourth-quarter slowdown to OpenAI's pricing; the call blamed comparisons and caution 6. Chief Executive Khozema Shipchandler puts voice AI at about 1% of all voice minutes 6. The abuse lands on the pipe too: one developer reports spam calls on a published number up sharply since 2024, with Twilio's filters failing 9.

Guided cash flow, insider selling, and a date in February

The case for holding is cash. Guided 2026 free cash flow rose to $1.19 to $1.20 billion, with about $700 million left on a $2 billion buyback 1.

Against it, Pictet, a Geneva fund manager, cut its Twilio stake 33.9% in the third quarter 10, and insiders sold $134.8 million of stock in 90 days, including 14,442 shares from Shipchandler at $291.03 on October 5, the day before the high, under a pre-arranged trading plan 210. Zacks, a stock-research firm, still rates the shares a buy, at 32.18 times forward earnings against an industry average of 26.82 11.

The guided-down quarter ends December 31, and management says it will go deeper on 2027 at the fourth-quarter call 6. February settles whether 11 to 12% was one quarter of caution or the new run rate 6.
