Emerson Electric beat, orders rose 14%, and the stock fell 5.6% as its 2027 plan spends all free cash flow
Emerson beat on fiscal Q4 earnings and orders jumped 14%, but its first fiscal 2027 plan converts that into about 5% sales growth and spends every dollar of free cash flow on buybacks and dividends at a record share price.

Emerson Electric+2.52% — Emerson Electric, up 2.52 percent today, the St. Louis maker of process controls, valves, test gear and industrial software, printed fiscal fourth-quarter earnings before the open on November 4, 2026, and the market marked the shares down 5.6% on the day 23. The beat was real: adjusted earnings of $1.86 topped the $1.85 consensus from seven analysts surveyed by Zacks, and revenue of $5.201 billion cleared the $5.12 billion estimate 2. The markdown is the market pricing what else was in the filing 23.
The order book says 14, the sales line says 7
The tension sits in two numbers from the company's own 8-K 1. Underlying orders rose 14% in the quarter and 9% for fiscal 2026; underlying sales rose 7% in the quarter and 4% for the year 1. CEO Lal Karsanbhai calls it "exceptional long-cycle project activity," company language for chip fabs, LNG and data-center work booked today and converted years out 13. The first-ever fiscal 2027 plan agrees with the slow number: about 5% sales growth and roughly $7.25 of adjusted earnings per share 13.
Orders grew 14% while sales grew 7% and the 2027 plan asks for 5%
Emerson's orders are rising at twice the rate its own 2027 plan converts them to sales

Every dollar of 2027 cash is already spent
Free cash flow of $3.8 to $3.9 billion is guided, and the plan allocates all of it: about $2.5 billion of buybacks and $1.3 billion of dividends 1. With the stock near $166 on Tuesday, a 23-times multiple on guided earnings, that repurchase runs at a record price 5. Much of the 10% adjusted EPS growth is bought, not earned 134. Meanwhile the chip-test business cooled to 15% underlying growth from 23% in June, Intelligent Devices, 55% of sales, grew 4%, and Europe fell 1% for the year 134.
The bear gets a hearing
Morgan Stanley+3.63% — Morgan Stanley, up 3.63 percent today holds an underweight rating and cut its target to $140, about 15.6% below the price 5. The bull camp, fifteen buy ratings and a $171.96 consensus target, needs that 14% order print to convert on schedule 5. Emerson's own 2027 plan forecasts that it will not, at least not next year 1.
