Google built the top-ranked AI model and the market still erased $500 billion in a day
DeepMind's Gemini 4 Carbon took the No. 1 benchmark score by a single point, but only a handful of cybersecurity defenders can use it and a rival's users are waiting on tokens. The same week, Alphabet's cash flow went negative again and the dip went unfilled.

One point ahead, one day too early
Google DeepMind released Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28, the same day Alphabet+1.23% — Alphabet, up 1.23 percent today printed third-quarter results, and the independent evaluator Artificial Analysis scored it 59 on its Intelligence Index v5.0: one point ahead of Anthropic's$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B Claude Opus 5.5 at 58, two ahead of OpenAI's$1.18T — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $1.18T GPT-6 Astra at 57, and nine ahead of Google's own previous flagship, Gemini 4 Argon 12.
The applause lasted one trading day. On October 29 Alphabet's stock had its worst day in its history as a public company, falling more than 12% and erasing about $500 billion of market value 3.
The model almost nobody can use
Capability is not the lab's constraint any more; serving it is. Google is granting initial access only to selected cybersecurity defenders through its Fairwind Program, and Artificial Analysis marks Carbon as lacking a publicly available API 12.
Perplexity$20.51B — Perplexity, private, latest valuation $20.51B chief executive Aravind Srinivas called Carbon the strongest model he has seen for long-form research and answer quality, a new state of the art on the WANDR benchmark, and said it reaches his Pro and Max users only once Perplexity has enough token capacity 4. FUNDA's tracker reaches the same verdict: Carbon leads the updated index "by a narrow margin" and "access remains limited" 5.
The announcement still drew a crowd. A r/singularity thread on the release collected 1,580 upvotes 6.

The same AI sits on both sides of the ledger
Inside Google Cloud, AI prints money: revenue grew about 103% to $30.7 billion, past the $28.7 billion analysts expected 7. Inside Search, AI eats the bill: revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion and missed 7.
Chief business officer Philipp Schindler told analysts the surge in AI Mode queries "had an impact because of the lower monetization we're seeing in AI Mode" 3. Capital spending more than doubled year over year to $51.36 billion, free cash flow came in at negative $9.07 billion, a second straight negative quarter and a first for the company, and long-term debt now stands at $125.1 billion against $21.6 billion a year ago 738.

The dip nobody bought
The usual buyer of an AI selloff sat this one out. Goldman Sachs+1.88% — Goldman Sachs, up 1.88 percent today analysts find US retail trading volumes down 20% since the summer and 45% since late 2025, as households hit the brakes 3. So the post-earnings dip went unfilled. Alphabet closed at $279.84 on October 30 and traded near $283.51 pre-market on November 2 9.
The number that settles it in January
Finance chief Anat Ashkenazi told analysts capex will "increase significantly in 2027", with details promised on the fourth-quarter call 7, and Jefferies+5.51% — Jefferies, up 5.51 percent today expects free cash flow to stay negative through 2028 3. The negative cash quarter itself was already on the record in these pages on October 30; what is new since is the benchmark lead, the token rationing and the empty bid 73.
The wider tape adds pressure this week, with 2,465 companies reporting and Apple on a rare Monday slot 10. Watch January: the 2027 capex guide decides whether the best model on the leaderboard can pay its own bills 10.
