HP fell 9% on Intel's PC warning as its insiders made seven sales and zero buys in six months
The chipmaker told the market the PC correction is accelerating as AI bids up memory, and HP fell about 9% on October 30 with thinning margins, a shrinking 2027 planning assumption of its own, and seven insider sales against zero buys in six months.

On October 29 Intel−29.36% — Intel, down 29.36 percent today told the market the PC correction is speeding up: "the pace of this PC correction has accelerated over the last 2 months," said chief executive Lip-Bu Tan 1. The next day Intel fell 30.91%, its worst day on record, and the PC makers went with it: Lenovo down about 15%, Dell down about 12.6%, HP−9.27% — HP, down 9.27 percent today Inc down about 9% by the close 28. The mechanism Intel named is the squeeze: AI data centers are buying the memory, memory prices push PC prices up, buyers wait.
Intel's own quarter shows AI winning and PC losing
The numbers, dated. Intel's third quarter: $16.5 billion revenue, up 21%, and a data center segment at $7.3 billion, up 78%, while the PC chip group brought $8.1 billion, down 5% year over year 3. "The industry continues to navigate one of the most significant supply shortages in history," Tan said 4.
Gartner+1.66% — Gartner, up 1.66 percent today counted worldwide PC shipments at 55.4 million units in the third quarter, down 22.4%, every one of the top six vendors falling, as memory and storage costs passed through to prices 1. Counterpoint forecasts the fourth quarter down 27%; Intel's own planning sees 2026 PC volumes down about 12% and 2027 down about 10% 1.

HP's own exhibits agree with Intel
HP's fiscal third quarter, reported in August, showed Personal Systems unit volume down 16% and segment operating margin at 4.6% 5. One tracker put HP's third-quarter calendar PC shipments down about 31% to roughly 10.3 million units, among the steepest of the large vendors, though that figure rests on a single unnamed tracker 5.
Gross margin has run from 23.6% two years ago to 18.8% in the quarter ended July, the lowest of the last ten 6. And HP's own SEC filing assumes industry PC volumes decline a mid-single-digit percentage in calendar 2027 5; The Inference flagged that assumption in September 7. Intel has now said the same thing, louder.

The squeeze hits both ends of HP
HP buys the memory the AI buildout consumes; Samsung and SK Hynix−7.62% — SK Hynix, down 7.62 percent today just posted record quarterly profits on that demand 3. Counterpoint calls the result structural adjustment: higher system prices and longer replacement cycles reshaping the market 3. HP is the most PC-exposed of the big hardware names, so a memory repricing raises its cost of goods and empties its order book at once 8.
The defense leans on memory prices normalizing
Intel still expects the environment to persist only until memory availability and prices normalize, with possible improvement in the second half of 2027 14. Counterpoint sees 2027 broadly flat, stabilization at a lower level it says should not be mistaken for recovery 1. The sell-side is no help: the median of nine analyst targets issued in May and June is $20, below Friday's close of $28.78 58. The bull camp on hardware is short on priced arguments.
The insider record is one-sided
HP insiders traded seven times in the past six months: zero purchases, seven sales 5. Chief Commercial Officer David McQuarrie sold six times, about $2.79 million worth 5. Printing president Anneliese Olson sold 18,997 shares at a weighted $32.56 on October 29 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted June 4, leaving her 169 direct shares 9. The plan predates the warning. The pattern does not.
HP's November print is the verdict
HP's fiscal fourth-quarter report lands in November with the memory bill inside it, and Dell reports November 24 1. The tell is memory pricing: Counterpoint says volumes stabilize only when memory normalizes 1. Until that reading, HP shareholders pay in volume and margin, and memory makers collect.
