SAP's AI now grades the exams that certify its own consultants; services revenue fell 4% to €1.02 billion

SAP's record backlog beat UBS's forecast, but services revenue fell 4% and cloud gross margin slipped. Two days later, SAP made AI both the examiner and the grader of the exam that keeps its consultants certified.

SAP certification badges for application consultants. From October 23, consultants renewing more than 100 of these credentials can be graded by an AI roleplay run by SAP itself.

Two days after SAP−0.89% — SAP, down 0.89 percent today reported its first €10 billion quarter, the German software giant quietly changed who gets to grade the people who implement it 1. From October 23, consultants keeping their SAP certifications current can renew through AI roleplays: the software plays the customer, watches the exchange and scores it, across more than 100 certifications 1. The exam that keeps a partner billable is now run by a product SAP itself sells.

The bill for AI is landing in the services line

The Q3 FY2026 print, published October 21, looks clean on top: cloud revenue up 26% to €6.67 billion, current cloud backlog up 26% at constant currency to €24.14 billion, ahead of the 24% to 25% UBS had forecast 23. But the fine print is where the AI story lives.

Services revenue fell 4% to €1.02 billion, non-IFRS cloud gross margin slipped 0.8 points to 74.3%, and about one percentage point of that cloud growth came from catch-up collections by customers returning from financial distress, not new demand 2. SAP reports no standalone AI revenue, even though nine of every ten of its 50 largest deals over the past year included AI and Business Data Cloud 2. The AI costs sit inside services and margin, and the certification renewal is where partners meet that shift first.

SAP's AI-led lines grow while the services that deploy them shrink

The umpire is an algorithm SAP owns

Analysts like the direction but question the referee. Frank Dickson of Dickson Research put it plainly: "The umpire is now an algorithm," and SAP has not said how scoring is calibrated, audited or appealed; SAP sells the training at $1,452 per user per year and grades the test 1. Sanchit vit Gogia of Greyhound Research notes the roleplay is not new, only its arrival at renewal, "where SAP's installed base lives," and asks who owns the definition of competence when SAP supplies the assistant, the customer and the assessor 1.

What January decides

SAP expects backlog growth to decelerate from FY2025's 25%, with about half of annual bookings landing in Q4 2. If AI-led consumption is real, usage and margin absorb the shift. If SAP's AI is grading its ecosystem out of billable work, services revenue and cloud gross margin show it in the January print. Watch those two lines.

Pegasystems drops its 15% growth target as customers delay software buys to test AI

Pegasystems said it sees no path above 10 percent contract-value growth this year, blaming heavier buyer scrutiny of large software purchases amid AI disruption. Its cloud business still grew 20 percent, and that split is now the question facing every workflow vendor.

Datadog bills $1.30 per AI credit against $23 per host, and November 4 earnings decide which wins

The security rally of October 23 lifted Datadog for the wrong reason. Its $1.30 AI credit bills agent activity, its host meter bills servers that agents let customers shrink, and November 4 earnings decide which meter wins.

Cloudflare takes over the compiler AI agents check their code with

Cloudflare has taken ownership of tsrs, a Rust port of Microsoft's TypeScript compiler that AI agents wrote almost unaided. The compiler earns nothing; the play is owning the toolchain agent-built software must pass through before it lands on Cloudflare's bill.
