Pegasystems drops its 15% growth target as customers delay software buys to test AI
Pegasystems said it sees no path above 10 percent contract-value growth this year, blaming heavier buyer scrutiny of large software purchases amid AI disruption. Its cloud business still grew 20 percent, and that split is now the question facing every workflow vendor.

Pegasystems−0.63% — Pegasystems, down 0.63 percent today, the enterprise workflow software company founded in 1983, spent this week showing what AI doubt does to an incumbent's numbers 123. In results on October 20 it missed consensus on both earnings and revenue 1, and on the call management said it sees no path above 10 percent growth this year in annual contract value, the yearly worth of its customer contracts, against the 15 percent goal it had carried into the year 23.
Pega's revenue growth has stalled near zero for a year

Its stated reason deserves rereading across the industry: clients are putting large technology purchases under greater scrutiny amid AI industry disruption 1.
AI experiments are eating the software budget
Chief financial officer Ken Stillwell told analysts that IT budgets are under pressure from AI spending, and that financial services clients in particular have poured money into AI experimentation 2. Dollars that once bought a five-year workflow platform now buy experiments, so approval chains lengthen and deals slip.
A trader on Stocktwits compressed the call into one line: companies are delaying big traditional software purchases while they evaluate AI that might do the same work more cheaply 4. Pega's strongest contract-value quarter of the year still arrived too late to save the outlook 2.
Pega's traditional lines shrank while its cloud business grew 20 percent
Data
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Consulting revenue | -18% |
| Subscription license revenue | -9% |
| Total revenue | 3.1% |
| Total ACV | 7% |
| Pega Cloud ACV | 20% |
| Cloud backlog | 25% |
Customers keep the cloud half and defer the rest
The split inside the quarter is the story. Subscription cloud contract value grew 20 percent and now carries most of the base, with backlog still building 2. The traditional lines moved the other way, with consulting and license revenue both shrinking 1. Customers are not leaving. They are committing to the running service and deferring the big transformation purchases, which is exactly where AI doubt lands.
The bottleneck has moved to deployment
The same week, the research firm Forrester+0.32% — Forrester, up 0.32 percent today named Pega a Leader in its evaluation of application-generation and low-code platforms, crediting a vision of "governed agentic systems, not standalone AI agents" and top marks on guardrails and governance 3. That is the right stand for an incumbent: Pega already runs Anthropic's$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B Claude, OpenAI's$1.18T — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $1.18T GPT and Google's Gemini inside its workflows and sells the control layer around them 5.
Its own call put the binding constraint further down the chain. Clients are slow to deploy the newest AI capabilities, so Pega built a forward-deployed engineering team, Lighthouse, to work inside customers until agents deliver value 2. The distance between what an agent demos and what an enterprise runs in production is where the value now sits, and Pega is paying engineers to stand in it.
The bulls are buying the half that still grows
Wall Street kept its ratings and lowered its numbers. Citigroup−1.57% — Citigroup, down 1.57 percent today and Barclays−1.45% — Barclays, down 1.45 percent today held their Buy and Overweight calls after the print, RBC had already raised its target before it, and the new targets run from $42 to $50 against a stock near $37 678.
The bull case is the cloud half plus the governance position; the withdrawn target is the price of the pause. The buyers doing the pausing are making the louder bet, that agents mature before their own workflows age out. If that bet pays, every workflow incumbent's renewal book is the collateral, and the vendors who make agents safe to run will collect the budgets the experiments are burning.
