Semtech's chips beat estimates while its stock halved: December 2 decides the turn

The AI-connectivity chipmaker beat estimates and booked record data-center sales, but the stock halved to about $92, two executives sold near the top, and a Form 144 notice landed the day after Friday's 12.75% bounce. December 2's report decides whether $103 is a floor or a rest stop.

Semtech+12.74% — Semtech, up 12.74 percent today closed at $103.21 on Friday, November 6, up 12.75% in a single session, after touching about $92 earlier in the week 12. The next day a Form 144, the notice an insider files before selling stock, was published for Semtech Corporation 3. The open notice does not name the seller or the share count. The bounce and the filing sit 24 hours apart, and the quarterly report on December 2 sits between the price and the story 3.

The price cut in half while the business beat its numbers

From a 12-month high of $201.99 the stock fell roughly 55% to about $92 in the first week of November, part of a de-rating, which means the multiple investors will pay compresses independent of any change in earnings, that dragged high-beta AI names down with it 24. From October 5 to November 3 the shares lost 33.9% while the S&P 500 lost 2.6% 4.

Nothing in the filings over those weeks showed demand breaking. The August quarter, reported August 25, brought earnings of $0.71 a share against a $0.61 consensus and revenue of $341.87 million, up 32.7% year over year 5. Data-center revenue, the line that powered the run, hit a record $100 million in the July quarter, up 91% year over year, about 29% of sales 4.

Capacity, not demand, is management's stated worry

Management has warned that secured manufacturing capacity may not cover demand in the second half of fiscal 2028 2. In October the company expanded a 20-year silicon germanium partnership with Tower Semiconductor, reserving dedicated wafer capacity across Tower's fabs in the United States, Israel and Japan for the amplifiers and drivers inside 800-gigabit and 1.6-terabit optical links 6.

That reservation was covered here on October 16; new since then is the halving, Tower's own quarter and the December test 7. Tower reported record September-quarter revenue of $526 million, up 33%, and guided the fourth quarter to $600 million 7. One line moved the other way: high-end consumer revenue slipped 5% year over year to $39 million 2.

Institutional filings split. ABS Investment Management disclosed a new position of about $178 million and Virginia Retirement Systems raised its stake 41.9%, while Kornitzer Capital Management cut its holding 11.7% 58.

Over the past 90 days insiders sold 14,237 shares for about $2.34 million, all disclosed as executed under pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plans: executive vice president Jason Green sold 2,766 shares at an average $190.35 on October 7, cutting his holding 27.3%, and chief financial officer Mark Lin sold 967 at $178.87 on October 1 5.

A pre-set plan says nothing about the seller's view of the stock; it only fixes the schedule in advance. The optics still count: against the $201.99 high, Lin sold 11.4% below it and Green 5.8% below it, a calculation from those prices, weeks before the stock halved 5.

The bear case is the multiple, not the orders

Even after the halving, the stock trades at 68.35 times trailing earnings on a $9.63 billion market cap 5. The consensus target is $213.11, more than double the Friday close, though Stifel−0.70% — Stifel, down 0.70 percent today cut its target to $200 in mid-October while UBS, BMO and DA Davidson set $230 58. With a beta of 2.50, Semtech moves twice as hard as the market, so a sector-wide compression of multiples alone cuts it deep 25. Until the shares reclaim their 200-day moving average near $125, Friday's jump reads as a relief bounce inside a broken trend 2.

December 2 is the reading that settles it

The fiscal third-quarter report lands on December 2 2. The company guided earnings of $1.02 to $1.08 a share; the street models about $1.13 on about $411 million of revenue, so a quarter that beats the company's own guide can still miss the market's 2. Inside the print, data-center revenue is the number that decides, against management's forecast of roughly 160% year-over-year growth, a forecast rather than a result 4. Friday's bounce showed buyers returned; the December 2 report decides whether the trend resumes 24.

Microchip's CEO called data center a bubble. Texas Instruments owns the capacity he cannot rent.

Microchip beat the quarter, guided December a hair light and fell 10% while its own book-to-bill sits above 1. Texas Instruments, which owns the fabs Microchip rents, guided flat with a restored cash machine and a February capital decision ahead.

Three directors of KLA, the largest maker of chip-inspection equipment, drew 187 million withheld votes on November 4 while the stock fell 13.3% the next day, even as the company posted record revenue and a 46.1% operating margin. Power Integrations fell 15.3% despite a $0.05 profit beat: 11.8 weeks of unsold chips decide the trade

A $0.05 earnings beat, then a 15.3% one-day loss in the AI rout. The fight is over a number the press release buried: 11.8 weeks of chips sitting in the sales channel, against data-center revenue that arrives in 2027 and later.

Nvidia asked TSMC to make memory. TSMC said no, and the answer runs through ASML's order book

The world's largest chipmaker publicly refused Nvidia's request to plan 3D DRAM production, leaving memory density to Samsung, SK hynix and Micron. Those three buy their lithography from one company, ASML, whose 2027 and 2028 output is already spoken for.

SiTime tripled revenue to $298.7 million and the market still cut it 60%

The chipmaker whose silicon clocks keep AI data centers synchronized posted the strongest quarter of the AI trade and still lost 60 percent of its value from September [3]. Friday's 17 percent snapback now has to prove itself before a 3-for-1 split resets every price on the chart.
