Snowflake sells 3x cheaper AI to customers, and thinner margins to investors

Snowflake pitches buyers 3x token efficiency while telling investors AI workloads earn less, and a $3.75 billion convert funds the bet. The December gross margin print decides.

Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy. His company pitched customers cheaper AI tokens this month while guiding investors to lower AI margins.

Snowflake+2.39% — Snowflake, up 2.39 percent today has a sales pitch for its customers and a confession for its shareholders, and it made both in the same month. On October 25 the company said its Cortex AI Gateway, which routes each request to the cheapest model that can handle it, delivered up to three times the token efficiency of running everything through one premium model, a result from its own test 1. Baris Gultekin, Snowflake's VP of Applied AI, called the economics of AI "boardroom math" 1.

The margin cut says the opposite

The boardroom math cuts the other way too. On September 2 Snowflake cut its fiscal 2027 product gross margin forecast to 74% from 75%, citing a higher revenue mix from fast-growing AI workloads that carry a lower contribution margin today 2. So the vendor sells buyers a tool for spending fewer premium tokens while telling the market that AI work is the part of the business earning less. Cheaper tokens for the customer, thinner margin for the seller, at least for now.

The buildout is not free. On September 29 Snowflake priced an upsized $3.75 billion of zero-coupon convertible notes due 2029 and 2031, more than the $2.76 billion of debt it carried on July 31 2. Debt has grown fast: $313 million two years ago, $2.76 billion now, and converts on top 2.

Debt grew ninefold in two years, and the convert nearly doubles it again

The fundamentals are real, the price is not

Revenue over the twelve months to July 31, 2026, hit $5.4 billion, up 32.0% from 28.4% a year earlier, and free cash flow reached $1.19 billion, up from $734 million, while the operating loss narrowed to 22.8% of revenue from 37.4% 2. But shareholders have paid a full price: the stock returned 131.9% in the six months to October 23 and now sits 11.8% below its October 9 high 2.

What the December print settles

Product gross margin is the figure to watch in the December fiscal Q3 report, and the second question is whether cheaper tokens grow Snowflake's consumption revenue or shrink it 2. Every shock since the 2020 listing has seen this stock fall 30.8% on average against 13.4% for the S&P 500, 66% in 2022 2. The router saves tokens. The market decides what they are worth.

One caveat: the three-times efficiency claim is Snowflake's own, from a test the company ran, not an audited benchmark, and Gultekin himself warns against leaning on benchmarks rather than real workloads 1. That caution applies to his own number first.
