SS&C's CEO dared anyone to rebuild Geneva with AI in two weeks; his Blue Prism unit shrank 4.5% organically

The SS&C CEO dared anyone to rebuild Geneva with AI in two weeks. The same filing shows his Blue Prism automation segment shrinking 4.5% organically and Q4 growth guided to 4%, with EPS growth carried by buybacks.

SS&C chairman and CEO Bill Stone at the company's Deliver conference in New Orleans, October 2024. On the October 22 earnings call he mocked a client's claim that AI could rebuild Geneva in two weeks.

Bill Stone told the market nobody will rebuild his software with AI. His own filing shows the AI-shaped part of his business shrinking. Both facts matter for anyone holding SSNC, and the second one is the story.

SS&C−6.05% — SS&C, down 6.05 percent today runs fund administration, accounting software like Geneva, and outsourced operations for asset managers and banks. On the October 22 earnings call, the chairman and CEO mocked a client's claim that his kid with AI could rewrite Geneva in two weeks: "Yeah, good luck," and in a regulated shop, once an agent errs, "the brakes come on so fast that you can't get it released again" 37. The quarter itself was fine: revenue up 7.8%, adjusted EPS up 14.8% to $1.78, record adjusted EBITDA of $674.8 million, guidance raised 12.

A beat on the surface, a shrinking AI segment underneath

The market sold the stock 6% anyway 6, and the reason sits one hop below the headline. The Intelligent Automation & Analytics segment, the Blue Prism automation unit management calls central to its AI strategy, shrank 4.5% organically, blamed on a lag between building products and selling them 34. Meanwhile Q4 organic growth is guided to about 4%, down from 5.2% 3. Full-year EPS growth of about 16.3% against revenue growth near 6% is the gap buybacks close: 1.9 million shares repurchased in Q3, a diluted share count down nearly 5% year over year 23.

The Blue Prism segment was the only SS&C business shrinking organically in Q3

The moat is real, but it is not growing

This is where the chain actually stands. AI agents can do the work; what stands between them and a regulated workflow is governance, domain depth and a stack that never fails on a Tuesday. Stone is right that the moat is real, and SS&C's 900 internal agentic workflows show it is doing the gap work itself 3.

But a strategy resting on owning automation should show that business growing, not shrinking, and earnings cannot be repurchased into growth forever. Watch two things before Q4: whether the IAA segment returns to growth, and whether the $2.0 billion of notes due September 2027, reclassified as current with a refinancing SS&C calls probable this quarter, actually gets done 2.
