Super Micro's $5 Billion Order Rides on Debt to Unrated Clients

Argentum AI, a Super Micro-backed neocloud, is seeking $5 billion of private credit to buy GPUs for a 300 MW Poland site, structured to finance chips leased to clients without investment-grade ratings. The market bid SMCI up 7.34%; the cash question moves to November 3.

Charles Liang, Super Micro's cofounder and chief executive, in 2025. His company's stock rose 7.34% on the report that a client is seeking $5 billion of private credit.

Super Micro's−0.76% — Super Micro, down 0.76 percent today order book just grew a new leg, and the leg is made of debt. Reuters reported on October 27 that Argentum AI, a Chicago-based "neocloud" founded in 2025 and backed by Super Micro Computer, is in advanced talks with a major private-credit firm for a $5 billion financing package to buy AI chips 5.

Argentum, led by CEO Andrew Sobko, says it holds more than $12 billion in contracted revenue, but the debt is structured for chips leased to customers without investment-grade credit ratings 5. Super Micro's stock rose 7.34% on the report 1.

The demand is borrowed, twice over

Follow the money down the chain. A private-credit lender funds Argentum, Argentum buys Super Micro servers, and Argentum's customers lease those GPUs while carrying sub-investment-grade credit. The hardware is destined for a 300-megawatt data center in Poland that Argentum secured with DL Invest Group and cloud gaming firm Boosteroid in a roughly $2.5 billion deal signed in May 5. Super Micro sells the boxes; it does not hold the loan. The credit risk sits with the lender, and the demand risk sits with whoever must keep paying the lease.

The financing arrives during a documented squeeze. Elon Musk wrote on X that debt markets have nearly shut off liquidity for firms without revenue independent of AI data centers, predicting 200-plus neoclouds face "guppy-level death and consolidation" 5. The contrast in the same week is stark: SpaceX−2.56% — SpaceX, down 2.56 percent today, with an investment-grade rating and Starlink cash flow, lined up $40 billion of chip debt through an Apollo affiliate, and Nvidia−0.44% — Nvidia, down 0.44 percent today-backed Nebius+1.07% — Nebius, up 1.07 percent today secured $3.5 billion from Citi+1.28% — Citi, up 1.28 percent today 5. Argentum, a 2025 startup leasing to unrated clients, is testing the other end of that ladder 5.

What November 3 answers

Investors will price the verdict soon: SMCI options imply an 11% post-earnings move, with the call on November 3 3. The company's preliminary September quarter showed $18.5-19.5 billion in revenue, above its earlier guide, but at a 12.0-12.5% gross margin, far below June's 17.5% GAAP rate, and the figures are unaudited 4. Fiscal 2026 paired $39.1 billion of revenue with $6.8 billion of cash used in operations 4. If the cheapest credit in the chain is what funds SMCI's demand, the beat is rented twice over.
