IREN borrowed $363 million against its GPUs as default insurance on Oracle and SpaceX hit records
Public debt markets are hitting their absorption limit for AI infrastructure, and the same morning IREN showed the workaround: private equipment financing secured by machines already earning.

The credit market that funds AI infrastructure is filling up, and the neoclouds are rerouting around it. Bloomberg reports double-digit yields on at least 18 junk-rated data-center financings, record default insurance on Oracle−0.31% — Oracle, down 0.31 percent today, SpaceX−3.25% — SpaceX, down 3.25 percent today, Nvidia−0.55% — Nvidia, down 0.55 percent today and Meta−1.19% — Meta, down 1.19 percent today, and insurers and European banks at their exposure caps 1. The workarounds are private and asset-backed: IREN−1.17% — IREN, down 1.17 percent today, whose buildout we covered on October 3, closed a $363 million equipment financing the same morning 2.
The whole risk stack is repricing at once
The yields show where the pressure sits. JPMorgan and Goldman+1.31% — Goldman, up 1.31 percent today had to sweeten Volta's $5 billion loan, which finances Nvidia GPUs and a Norway data center Anthropic has contracted, past an 11% yield 3.
Top-rated data-center bonds went from below 5% at the start of 2026 to about 7%, with issuance above 8% described as hard, and investment-grade tech bonds now average about 6% 1. Hedge costs moved with them: default protection on Oracle, SpaceX, Nvidia and Meta hit records at levels typical of junk-rated borrowers, and Oracle set the tone with a force-majeure notice seeking to defer payments on a delayed New Mexico data center 1.
Data-center debt yields have moved up the whole risk stack

| Value | |

| Top DC bonds, today | 7% |
| IG tech bonds | 6% |
| Volta $5B loan | 11% |
The buyer of the debt is the bottleneck
The price is the symptom. Investors learned from the Oracle notice that tenant contracts can carry off-ramps, including the right to walk after delays of 180 days or more, and they now demand to be paid for that option 1. A European bank's technology lending desk says transferring risk off its books takes five months, which stalls new lending, and Citadel Securities warns of a growing disconnect between what Silicon Valley expects to raise and what financiers can deliver 1.
The private deal that slipped through is small

Where the money still moves
IREN's deal shows the route. Instead of a syndicated bond, it refinanced already-deployed, revenue-generating GPU servers with Wingspire, a Blue Owl+0.81% — Blue Owl, up 0.81 percent today equipment-finance arm, and six lenders led by Eldridge and Silver Point, secured by the equipment and backed by multi-year customer contracts 2. Liquidity comes from gear already earning, not faith in a buildout. Expect more neoclouds to follow. The watch item: which hyperscaler guarantee prices worst as they do 12.
