Tesla cut 2026 capex 20% to $20 billion while promising more spending on a fab and a robot
Tesla's CFO cut 2026 capex 20 percent, then promised years of rising spending on a chip fab and a robot that is not finished. The gap is funded by a one-time tariff refund and a shrinking profit.

Tesla's−0.83% — Tesla, down 0.83 percent today third-quarter call on October 22, 2026, left investors with two stories that cannot both be true 1. CFO Vaibhav Taneja cut 2026 capital spending guidance by 20 percent, from $25 billion to about $20 billion, after a quarter in which capex came in at $4.7 billion, $3.2 billion below Wall Street's consensus 1. Then he said capex "for the next few years would continue to expand" for Robotaxis, Optimus production, solar manufacturing, AI compute and a semiconductor fab 2.

A shortfall funded by a tariff refund
The gap is the problem. Tesla's quarterly filings show capex nearly doubling year over year to $5.8 billion in the second quarter and $4.7 billion in the third, while net income fell 43 percent from a year earlier to $787 million on flat revenue of about $28 billion 15. Musk sized the Austin Terafab chip project at "tens of billions" through early 2028 and possibly more than $100 billion long term 1.
Against that, the $1.5 billion of quarterly free cash flow and $45 billion of cash on hand 1 fund the fab for a few quarters, not years. The marginal money is a customs refund: energy gross margin jumped from 20.4 percent to 33.1 percent, mainly on tariff refunds and vendor warranty credits, and Taneja said that money "is being reinvested to expand production capacity in the U.S." 2. One-time cash is being spent as if it were margin.
The robot adds a bill, not a business
Optimus is in early production at Fremont, but Musk said the robots' hands are unfinished, the AI5 chip lands around April 2027, outside deliveries are guided to the end of 2027, and Tesla needs 10,000 to 20,000 robots just to train the software 4. The company did not say how many it has built 4. Tesla is also aiming for 5 million vehicles a year by about 2030 23, another capital claim on a shrinking profit base 5.
AI bears like GLJ's Gordon Johnson read the guidance cut as the first hyperscaler-style capex cut, the signal many say ends the AI trade 1. That may be premature: Tesla still guides spending up, and the $30 billion borrowing line it secured 1 shows markets remain open. The honest read is smaller: Tesla needs other people's money to keep both promises, the fab and the robot. Watch the next quarter's cash line and whether Terafab capital lands in the 2027 guide 1.
