Volvo hands Aurora the driverless flag six days before the $80 million test
Volvo Autonomous Solutions says its Q1 2027 fully driverless US debut belongs to Aurora, not the Waabi/Warp lane it just opened with a safety driver still aboard. That weakens the short case six days before Aurora's October 28 business review, the first check on an $80 million run-rate promise built on $2 million of revenue.

Six days before Aurora Innovation's+0.72% — Aurora Innovation, up 0.72 percent today October 28 business review, the short case lost its best exhibit 2. The bear argument ran: rivals are taking Aurora's Texas lanes before the revenue shows. On October 22, Volvo Autonomous Solutions closed that door itself, saying its planned first fully driverless run on US highways in Q1 2027 "will begin with the company's other tech partner Aurora Innovation," not the Waabi lane it just opened. 2
The lane in question is the point. Volvo and Waabi launched revenue service for forwarder Warp between Dallas and Houston on October 5, but with a human safety driver aboard, and a spokesperson said there is "no timeline" for removing the observer. 2 The Wall Street Journal's October 19 report on Interstate 45 found the same split across the corridor: some trucks run with nobody aboard, others carry a human as a precaution. 3 Driver-out is the commercial product; the rest is data collection.
The bulls now hold the OEM slot and the regulator's pen
Aurora's bull case stacks up. Volvo, a top-tier truck maker, picked Aurora for its own driverless debut. The FMCSA granted a five-year exemption on October 7 letting Level 4 trucks use cab-mounted beacons instead of roadside triangles, a rule change Aurora requested and sued for after a 2024 denial. 4
The company claims more than 500,000 driverless miles at an annualized 225,000 miles per truck, about twice a conventional truck's use. 1 Fleet plans back the scale-up: about 30 trucks today, 200 by year-end, with customers from McLane to Detmar Logistics, whose trucks run 20 hours a day. 5

The arithmetic has not moved
Neither has the other ledger. Second-quarter 2026 revenue was about $2 million against the $80 million fourth-quarter run rate CFO David Maday promised in September, a 40-times jump in one quarter. 1 The quarterly operating loss widened to $266 million. 6 Insiders sold 6,390,753 shares, worth $44.8 million, in ninety days, and Zacks rates the stock a strong sell at $5.34 against a $13.22 consensus target. 1 Kodiak's driver-out IKEA run targets year-end on the same corridor. 1 None of that changed this week.

What changed is who carries the flag when a truck maker goes fully driverless. October 28 now tests one question: whether the run rate is booked freight on priced lanes, or a promise with a Volvo logo on it.
One gap stays open: no fetched source quantifies how much freight the Waabi/Warp lane carries, so its weight as competition is unmeasured. 2
