Tesla's Shanghai exports hit 51% of China wholesale as domestic sales fell 11.9%
Tesla's China retail sales fell 11.9% this year while Shanghai's exports now make up about half its China wholesale, landing in Europe just as Chinese brands take record share. The robotaxi market the stock is priced for is being claimed by rivals with permits, insurers and a $37,000 vehicle.

Tesla's+2.61% — Tesla, up 2.61 percent today Shanghai factory was built to anchor its China business. Through August 2026 it has become an export house: exports from China rose 115% year on year and now make up about 51% of Tesla's China wholesale sales, the total the plant sells including vehicles shipped abroad 1. Retail sales inside China, the cars Chinese buyers actually register, fell 11.9% in the first nine months of 2026 to 381,088 vehicles, on China Passenger Car Association data 1. September told the same story in one line: Shanghai-built Model 3 and Model Y sales of 95,366 vehicles were a 2026 high, but exports jumped 58% while domestic sales fell 9.4% 2.

The exports land where Chinese brands are strongest
The export strategy has a destination problem. The vehicles land in Europe, where Chinese brands just took a record 22.5% of new Norwegian passenger car registrations in October and Tesla's Danish share was 0.73%, behind BYD, Leapmotor, XPeng and SAIC's MG 3. Tesla's own European month was genuinely good, with registrations up 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark, its best October on record in Norway, but the gains ride on weak year-ago comparisons and the registration data carry no absolute volumes 45.

The robotaxi lane is filling without Tesla
Meanwhile the robotaxi lane in China, the market Musk's autonomy ambitions are supposed to be tested in, per Barron's, is filling up with rivals that already hold permits and insurers 5. Baidu's+2.24% — Baidu, up 2.24 percent today Apollo Go and Lyft's+4.36% — Lyft, up 4.36 percent today Freenow debuted the sixth-generation Apollo RT6 in London, a purpose-built robotaxi costing about $37,000 to make, targeting driverless testing in 2027 6.
WeRide+4.95% — WeRide, up 4.95 percent today runs roughly 3,600 automated vehicles, more than 1,800 of them robotaxis, and has lined up Allianz and Ping An to underwrite tens of thousands of Level 4 vehicles across East Asia, the Middle East and Europe 6. Level 4 means fully self-driving cars that operate with no human backup expected 6.
The bull case is priced on autonomy arriving on time
The named bull case is explicit about what the stock depends on: Tigress Financial maintains its Buy rating and $550 price target on Full Self-Driving subscriptions, Cybercab robotaxis and Optimus robots, and Goldman Sachs+1.82% — Goldman Sachs, up 1.82 percent today says Tesla's stock performance will hinge more on AI and robotics updates than near-term earnings 2. Musk's own timetable, as our November 2 piece carried, is for autonomy revenue to start mattering financially around the second quarter of 2027, and the valuation pays for that option in advance 2.
The record shows the factory that would build and pay for those robotaxis is shipping to a continent where its Chinese competitors are landing first, and the home market for robotaxis already has fleets with city permits, underwriters and a $37,000 vehicle. Watch the Shanghai export mix and China retail sales into year-end: they price the option against a date the company itself set, and the shareholders holding the stock are the ones paying for it early.
