Tesla stops paying for referrals that sell cars, pays for referrals that sell software

Tesla quietly stripped vehicle rewards from its US referral program and now pays owners in FSD months, a customer-acquisition budget re-pointed at the 10 million subscription milestone in Elon Musk's pay package.

Elon Musk at a Tesla town hall in Amsterdam. Tesla's revamped US referral program now pays owners in FSD months instead of cash toward a car.

Tesla gutted its car referral program and said almost nothing

Tesla's−0.77% — Tesla, down 0.77 percent today referral program was built to move cars. When it returned in August 2024, a buyer got $1,000 off a Model S, X, Y or 3 with a friend's code and the referrer earned $500 in credit 1. This week both halves went to zero. The US Refer and Earn terms, a page stamped "Updated February 24, 2026," no longer list any vehicle as a qualifying purchase for buyer or referrer rewards, and Tesla announced nothing 1.

In its place, a new FSD referral went live, spotted first in the Tesla app's code and then confirmed by Tesla on X 2.

The reward now pays toward a milestone in Musk's pay package

The mechanics are modest. The friend gets one month of FSD (Supervised) free, and if they convert to the $99 monthly plan the referrer earns a free month or a $99 Tesla Credit, capped at 12 rewards a calendar year, worth at most $1,188 12. But the event that earns the reward is specific: a paid subscription. Tesla started disclosing the subscription count in January because 10 million active FSD subscriptions is a milestone in Musk's 2025 CEO Performance Award 1. A free month does not count toward it. A conversion does 1.

The funnel adds no cars, and pays far less than it did

The referred person must already own a registered Tesla, so the program cannot add one vehicle to the roughly 8.9 million Tesla had sold by the end of 2025 1. It mines that existing fleet for subscribers 1. And the reward keeps shrinking. Tesla stopped selling FSD outright on February 14, so a reward month is software already sitting in the car, a giveaway that costs Tesla close to nothing in cash 1. The same free-at-the-margin play is running in Robotaxi, where first-time riders in Houston and Dallas now ride free 3.

The referral reward fell from $1,000 off a car to a $99 software credit in two years

The meter accelerated every quarter of 2026

Tesla's reported count has climbed for five straight quarters, from 1.04 million in Q3 2025 to 1.74 million, with Q3's 260,000 net additions its best yet 4. At that pace, 10 million is about eight years away 4. Tesla says more than 75% of new North American deliveries included an FSD subscription in Q3, up nearly 20 points from the prior quarter 4. The money is showing up where subscriptions sit: services and other revenue rose 33% year over year to $4.61 billion while automotive revenue fell 3% 5.

Europe is the locked door, and the count is contested

The program is US-only for a reason. In Europe, Tesla renamed the product Tesla Assisted Driving this month after Germany's transport ministry called the Full Self-Driving name misleading 6. Reuters reported that the approval campaign rests on flawed company safety studies and pressure on the Dutch regulator RDW; seven traffic-safety researchers found the study sample far too small, and Tesla's own fine print says the comparisons are not causal estimates 67.

Ten EU countries have approved the system, about 14% of the bloc's population; Germany, France, Italy and Spain, together 58%, have not 8. The headline count is contested too: it follows the award's definition and includes owners who paid upfront, some at $15,000, and Tesla does not disclose how many of the 1.74 million actually pay monthly 4.

The cheapest tell lands in January

Two dates settle it. Tesla's Q4 letter reports net FSD additions against 260,000; if referral-driven conversions move the number, software demand is real and Tesla has found the cheapest customer-acquisition channel in the auto business 54. If the count stalls, Tesla has switched off its only referral channel that ever sold cars and harvested nothing, and the autonomy case rests on robotaxi revenue Musk does not expect to matter until 2027 54.

The EU-wide vote, expected in December, decides whether the funnel ever gets the other 450 million people 7. The old program paid cash to move metal. This one pays in software months to move a milestone.
